I got a transmission for my truck Saturday, a NP 435, and after I got it out, I took a look at the engine(300 six) in the truck, a 83 F150 HD 2wd, it has completly no emissions system, no air pump or bracket, no egr valve(I grabbed the spacer and stuck it on my truck), all of 3 vacum hoses, a totally different valve pan cover, V8 style rocker s, and probably some goodies I can't see, is this indeed a 300 HD, if it makes any difference, the rest of the truck is heavy duty, front and rear stabilizer bars, the granny low 4 speed, a heavy duty semi floating rear end(the case is larger than my 9",) and according to the door tag, it came with LT235/75R15's. Anyone know if this a 300 HD I have found, if it is, I'm going to buy the whole truck, it should be worth $50.

I had a 1979 Ford Truck shop manual from 1979 that stated there was an optional HD 300-inch six was available on light trucks (100-350, standard on 600 series). It had a forged steel crank and heavy duty pistons and valves, along with heavier cooling system. I know my '84 manual did not indicate a HD, so apparently it was dropped before 84 (probably long before 84).
In the chilton manual it states that the 300 HD was only put out in 76 I believe. I know that the manual doesn't show them in the 80's because I checked to see if there was a chance I would have one.
Not sure I trust the Chilton Manual. As I recall they listed only the 240 in the early years of the 240/300, yet many sources say both engines were produced beginning in 1965. I also recall reading that the HD 300 was available in the 60s, which means it probably ran through the 70s and then was dropped when Ford decided on a different engine for heavy trucks (the HD 300 was used in F600s). While the 300 six is no longer available in pickups, Pitt Electric (look on the web) still offers it for generators. I wonder if theirs is the HD?
I don't know if it's a HD or not, but, they have it listed at <a href="http://www.pittauto.com/ford_engines.shtml">http://www.pittauto.com/ford_engines.shtml</a>
and Ford Power Products lists it here
<a href="http://fordpowerproducts.com/topics/product1.htm">http://fordpowerproducts.com/topics/product1.htm</a>
with 145hp@3600 and
241 Lbs/Ft@2400 on gasoline with 8.3:1 compression and a weight of 475 lbs, while Pitt Auto Electric lists it at 112hp@2800 and 246 Lbs/ft at 2000 rpm on gas as an industrial engine, and 126HP@3600, and 246 Lbs/ft @ 2000 as a generator engine, bolth with 8:1 compression and a weight of 473 lbs.
