Hey guys I have a 91 Explorer. My problem is....my wife was driving the x and as she was pulling into a parking lot the truck died on her and will not start now.
It turns over and maybe every tenth turn of the key it acts like it wants to start but it won't. The truck had no prier issues accept every now and again it would have a hard start. The engine would turn over and over for at least 10-15 seconds before it would start. The truck has new plugs wires and air filter. about 3 months ago I dropped the tank and replace the float ball because me fuel gauge was not working. If any body has any tips or comments that would be great.
You need to determine if the problem is fuel or spark related. When you turn the key to the 'on' position, you should hear the fuel pump run for about 2 seconds. If you don't hear it, then your problem is fuel related. Check the inertia switch and fuel pump realy. If you do hear it run, it could be a clogged filter or a pressure problem, or spark related. Check to see if you are getting spark to the plugs.
Has the fuel filter been changed? If not, I would try there first (start with the cheap and easy fixes). If it has been hard to start, you could have a blocked fuel filter. It could be taking a minute to create enough vaccum to pull the fuel through the filter.
I would start there. Next, you will be getting into electric sensors. Let us know if that does not work and we can go from there.
I'm at work now so I can't check these things at this time. What is the best way to check for spark. I hate to sound stupid, but I am not good a finding problems just fixing them once I know what it is. Thanks for the reply.
My favorite way to check for spark is to hook up a timing light and see if it flashes. Alternatively, pull the spark plug, hook it up to the wire, and hold it against a ground point and see if you can see the spark.
Well No buzzing sound from the fuel pump as soon as I sprayed starter fluid in the intake it tried to start. So looks like either I have a bad pump or the wire came loose from the pump when I put a new float ball in a few months ago
Thanks for the help.
