Would YOU wait for an '07??

Some of you read my "almost" purchase of an ordered '05 story... Well as the wife and I are discussing ordering an '06 (thru PolarBear, where else?!), we're thinking if we wait a year, we could be ordering an '07...

We have the advantage of not being in a "must buy" situation -- our '99 PSD has low miles and runs fine, maybe could use a set of shocks, but that's it, and even the shocks could wait...

We likely won't be buying another truck for a long time, so if it's a matter of putting it off a year, we could live with that. I'm leaning this way 'cause I like the idea of a twin turbo set-up vs. the variable vane single turbo. This is assuming the twins would be either two smaller, full range turbos, or a small/large turbo set-up, and NOT two variable vane ones!

So what would you do?

I know why you are thinking of waiting but i for one would not one a 1st year totally new motor\electrics after the bumpy 6.0 launch .
IE, if you're gonna wait on the possible twins motor i would wait till the 2nd production year (08) but thats me.

I didn't realize it is a totally new motor -- my understanding is it's a pretty close relative of the 6.0, and still built by International, is this not true? I actually think there's less risk in a std. twin turbo set-up than when they went to this variable vane turbo -- it's one thing I suspect could be behind the wildly varying mileage reports on the 6.0 (IMO).

Now you do have a point on the electronics -- how many software updates (flashes) did the 6.0 have??!
Not sure if I can wait two years...

My truck (05) runs great along with most other people on this site. You have to realize that when someone has a problem with something they start looking on the internet for others with the same trucks and problems. Granted there were some problems at first, every new vehicle does. SO there is a lot of people that are going to complain about problems. I have owned in the last couple years a Chevy Avalanche (8.1L engine), dodge dakota (4.7L v8), a dodge 1500 (5.7L). My PSD is the best running truck I have ever owned. Even in cold weather the thing never acts up. I run a tuner in 100HP mode, with stndard exhaust and no problems with coolent either. I just purchased a water injection kit & exhaust and I will see how that goes. Also a lot of the problems are self induced by tuning these trucks. If I blow something up now, it's my fault and not Fords! Yes the new engine is a take-off of the 6.0 built by International, but there are still design changes that are most likely going to leed to problems at first. IMHO by an 05 or 06.

I agree with LOOnatic. After seeing what happened with the release of the 6.0, I would not want to be Ford's testing ground. That said I'm very happy with my '04.

my .02. There could be "new" probs with the 6.5, or not. Also Body styling could change a lot as well. I remeber hearing something about auto makers reducing the height of SUV and trucks in the future, 08 or 10, because other cars when the get hit, are going under the bumper ...... Not sure if its happening, or just gvt or the automakers talking about height restrictions. I personally do not like trucks that sit low to the ground, but lots do.

By the 06. Then trade it in for a late 07 or 08......

I'd wait. I don't think Ford is gonna let the same bug bite them twice in a row.

I would definitely wait if I were in your position. FMC can't afford another fumble in the diesel light truck market like they experienced with the 6.0. Read a report just this week on the % of market share they're losing to GM and Dodge. As the industry leader they can't afford this situation too long. I'm probably going to sell my 2004 PSD soon as I just don't trust it anymore. Then I'll wait and see what Ford does with the new engine. I'm afraid after the 07's are out there won't be a lot of demand for the 6.0's in the used truck market. Absolutely love the truck, but hate the engine.

I am in the middle of a buy back of my '04. I was going to get an 05, but was talked out of it by a relative who works for Ford Corporate. According to him, they even held production of the 06 Super Duties for three weeks to make sure that all of the changes (fixes) were incorporated in them. They will be the building block for the 07, which is really a punched out 6.0L, with a few other changes. I would not buy an 07, being it will be it's first year, although it will no doubt be a more proven design than the 03's & 04's were.
Just my .02..Oh, BTW, my 06 is on order...Can hardly wait..Bob <><

I wouldn't want to be Ford's proving ground for an '07 either. Sure it's still going to be built by Int'l but the electronics sound like htey are going to change a lot. Twin turbos alone will cause a lot of changes. BTW, twin variable vane turbos makes no engineering sense unless they plan 1 turbo per 4 cylinders? I'm sure they will be a small / large turbo pair. As for whether Ford will "allow" problems in the market with the new 6.4l it's not up to them. I don't think they wanted problems with the 6.0l but they got them and took 2 years to work most of the bugs out like it or not. You can only do so much testing of a new product in a lab environment, you will ALWAYS run into some problems with a fully lab certified product once it hits the real world. I think that's Mark's 5th law of engineering

Personally I would wait until at least mid '08 even if '07 went by without any major isues posted on this or any other boards. Myself and my pocket book have learned not to be the first to own any type of new technology unless the company is giving me an incentive to own it. Now there is an idea Ford should look into!

I'm ready for 2007......if it is as flawless as my 2003 I will be one happy customer.

If you think Ford had issues with the 6.0L introduction.....you never owned a GM product. Now talk about stepping in deep dew dew.....

and I knew people that bought the first couple of years Dodge put the Cummins in their trucks -- can you say twisted frames?!

One of the friends I know that has a 6.0 bought one of the early '03s as well, never a problem and he's at 60k miles now and still lovin' it!

I just don't think I can wait 'til '08... Now one of us has to be the guinea pig don't they?!
