Point gap

I was just wondering what the point gap is for a 72' 240 distributor. The one that autozone gave me isn't perfectly smooth like it should be.

The point gap should be .025. Your idle problem may not have anything to do with your point gap. IF you have aftermarket wires they cause all kinds of problems. Take a look in the dark and make sure you dont see any spark jumping. I recently removed a new set of Lifetime Warranty wires and put back on the very old wires that were on my 65. I just changed them because they were so old and stiff. There were no problems at all. I truely believe that those old small gauge, solid core wires are 10 times better than this modern silicone crap.

Some people widen a point gap a thousandth or so. You can try that I guess. All you are changing is the dwell.

Thanks man I'll try that tonight. I didn't put the cheapo silicone wires on it, and the cap and rotor are motorcraft, but the only plugs they had were Champion, I've never used those and was wondering if I should get some Autolite or Motorcraft plugs, also my coil is very old, I wonder if it would be a good idea to buy a new one?
