I bought a 1983 f150 stepside that has a 300i6 and a 4 speed with a granny gear. I built a 302 a couple of years ago that has been bagged in my shed. I'd really like to drop the 302 in this truck along with a 5 speed. I know I'll have to change the rearend and drive line, but are there any wiring harness problems with this swap or any other major things I should be aware of? Any help would really help me out. Thanks in advance.
Why would you have to change your rear and driveline? I swapped my 300 I6 for a 351W and didn't have any problems with the wiring harnesses. I had to get creative on the throttle linkage and front mounted accessories, other than that, it's a straight swap.
I couldn't have swapped my motor without the wiring diagrams in the back of the Haynes manual. They should have one for your truck. Also, I called them up and they sent me some that weren't listed in the book (power window stuff)
I have a 1983 flareside that had the six clyinder
with a three speed stick. We swapped in a 91 302 with a five speed. The original driveshaft bolted right up, but the clutch linkage had to be cut and modified. The throttle linkage also had to be modified and we installed the V8 radiator. Did away with the computer and the fuel injection and run three duces, and a mallory ignition. The stock wiring harness was fine. Also used the V8 motor mounts. We did have to change the gears in the rearend as ours were 247's. We installed a set of 355 gears and now we run 65 to 70 MPH in OD at about 2000 RPM's. Well worth the swap! Hope this helped.
