i am going to buy a floor jack, i think my 2 ton is too small for my garage.
what brand of floor jack would you recommend?
any things i should look for, is Craftsman fine?
I have a 3 1/2 ton Larkin that's worked great for me. The one thing I looked for in a new floor jack was getting one that had a long handle and would raise and lower without having to take the handle out to lower like most of the smaller jacks. I keeped getting tired of the handle slipping out when positioning it and having to crawl under the truck to lower it with those short handles. A friend has a Craftsman 3 1/2 ton in his garage and he hasn't had any trouble with his either. Both and lifted my F350 diesel with no problem.
I have a 3 1/2 ton (either HF or AZ) 'truck' service jack. The cradle will lift about 21 inches. I needed it for my Jeeps, but I found it works perfect for my p/u also. Handle attaches with a bolt. You turn the handle one way to close the valve and jack up. Turn it the other to open the valve and lower it.
I think I paid about 80 bucks for it, but that was almost 10 years ago, and I have only added fluid to it once.
Any opinions on the aluminum Craftsmans? I like them, but they're made in China. I've got a problem with that considering they're a big part of why I'm unemployed.
Anyone know of an aluminum USA built jack?
I've got the Aluminum 2 ton jack from Craftsman. It gets used almost daily and it's great. Only 18" of lift, but that will get my jeep of the ground (31" tires) and it's good for carrying around, it's a whole lot lighter than the others.
I recently bought a 3 1/2 ton 'Michelin' from Sams Club, what a beast. It lifts it's full height in 3 pumps, has a nice U-joint in the handle to lower the jack instead of cheapo gears, and it's only $60. If you don't mind the heft, it's the best jack I have ever used for $60.
phinxter... Do you know where it was made? From Sams Club, probably in China... Hope it's good steel.
I would be more worried about the seals in the ram blowing out before the steel fails, this thing weighs like 60 lbs. I have a cheap 2 1/2 ton jack made in taiwan I used the hell out of that now serves as my spare tire jack, that I bought in 1987 at K-mart, still works. Besides I support what I crawl under with jackstands.
I have to agree with Phinxter, if there are any problems with the imports it will probably be with the ram seals. I dont know of any jacks bending or having any sort of metal failure issues, despite the country of orgin.
I have a Werner that I got back in the early eighties and it has been flawless, despite being the less than great treatment it has received over the years.
My sarcasm didn't come across the net...
Anyway, being from the mold-making industry, I've seen chinese mold steel that rusted instantly, and that had large voids in it... and mold steel is supposed to be one of the highest grades... I'm also currently unemployed due in large part to Chinese trade. So this is why I try to buy American, or at least anything not made in China...
Anyway, I'm sure they have to meet certain safety standards to bew imported.
