Ok i got a 93 351 e40d, and i just got a code reader. I first did the KOEO test, and got a 111 pass code. Then the code reader automaticaly goes into the CM test, and i got a 634 manual shift lever sensor voltage high/low than expected, or A/C on error. I have an automatic tranny and PB T-case,so what manual lever is it talking about? Oh and the A/C was OFF when i ran the test. After all that i ran the KOEO test and passed that one with 111.
The MLPS tells the PCM which gear is selected in the E4OD transmission. Its part of the shift linkage assembly on the tranny. If the linkage is loose it can sometimes trigger this code if the truck isn't all the way in gear. Have you ever had to push the gear shift stalk up or down to "convince" the truck it was in PARK well enough to start? This is the most likely and most common problem but the MLPS is known for just going south on ocassion.
I also have a 93, and I also have had the 634 pop up recently. I check for any codes every oil change, and last time I got a 634 in CM. I had no CEL, or any symptoms at all like hard starting or a hard time finding P so I can start, in fact no problem with the gear shifter at all. Both the KOEO and KOER tests came back 111, and since there were no outward symptoms of the MLPS failure, I went ahead and cleared the 634 out of the CM.......drove around a day or so and rechecked for it.........it did not come back, so I figure it was a anomaly and should be fine for some time yet.
You may also get lucky and have it not come back.......but that said I can tell you it is not uncommon for the MLPS to fail. It is a easy R & R, and the part should cost less than $50.
