96 4.9 Vacuum

Couple questions.

I recently got a 96 F150 with a 4.9 for $800, one reason I got it so cheap is it was idling rough and has an exhaust leak under the hood. I have no idea on the vacuum routings on this truck, I bought a Chilton’s and it doesn’t really show anything.

When I started working on it I noticed the large vacuum line from the center of the intake was burnt completely in half. I assume it went it went to the pcv valve? That’s where I ran it anyway, after fixing that it helped a lot.

I can hear what appears to be a vacuum leak somewhere from the front top of the engine, any ideas what that may be?

I also seem to have an exhaust leak somewhere from the middle right of the engine, seems to be coming from the intake ?

If anybody would have an image of the vacuum and emission routings it would be a huge help before I remove the upper intake.

Sorry for all the questions but I would luv to get this baby ready for inspection and show it off the guy that sold it to me.

Thanks

Kenny.

This is something I have done a couple of times in the past when really stuck with a problem like that. Find a couple of trucks exactly like yours for sale and give them a real close "inspection". Digital or polaroid cameras and a note pad work well. Good luck.

I have a 96 F-150 w/ the 4.9L I-6 as well, and have both the Haynes and the Chiltons, and get quite confused as well. I wish there was an underhood image that labelled every component/vacuum line. (the chiltons has this for most trucks except the 96's)

Mine has a diagram, but it is a very simplified schematic diagram. It shows me a few components and the hoses that run between them, but it doesn't tell me where and what these components/hoses are and look like

any year from 92 on should be ok . want ads, car lots, rental trucks.. a lot of these trucks are around.

or take and post good digital pics of your trouble spots in engine compartment. and a clear explanation of what we are seeing in pic. than maybe someone could help.

I recently had a vacuum leak on my 94 I6. Turns out it sucked the throttle body gasket in and had a leak there. There isnt much metal holding it down so it didnt take much to suck it in. spray some ether around there and see if the revs come up at idle.

the big fat one that goes from the bottom of the manifold to the top of the valve cover is the PCV

there is a red (at least in 94) vacuum line that runs under the front of the upper intake plenum and connects to the vacuum header (that port with 5 or 6 vacuum lines coming off it). im not near the truck so i dont exaclty know where it went from (i think it had something to do with the air pump). mine was cracked under the manifold so there is another thing to check.
