If it's a N P 435 a tin cap holds the lever down. Push down against the spring and turn it counter clockwise around 30 degrees then it will release. Don't get me started as there's alot to do to get a 435 into shape after many miles and years use. Good luck.

If it's a T-18 then the cap threads down on it. Then there is a pin that slides out to remove teh shifter, simple stuff. Now to figure out which trans you have as both 4-speeds (T18 & NP435) were common on these trucks.
