I am the process of customizing my 1973, presently it has a 240 inline 6, c4 and a 9" rear. I want to put a 302 v8 in it. I know I will need a new radiator(which it needs anyways), new motor mounts. What I need to know is if I will be able to re-use my bell housing, transmission, tranny mount, drive shaft, tranny cooling lines going the radiator, fuel lines, wirings for gauges, etc.?
Should be a pretty simple install, the I6 and small block V use the same bolt patterns on the bellhousing. You will probably want to get the flywheel and clutch for the 302 as it may be balanced differently than the I6 (I do not know for sure personaly).
If all you want to do is swap engines the only things that you will need are the engine mount towers, motor mounts and a radiator, everything else is reuseable, If you want a pair of towers E-mail me. I have a pair just laying around and would like to get rid of them
While you can reuse your C4 from the 240, you need to get a 302 flex plate - Mike G was correct when he said the 302 is balanced differently from the 240. The 240 is a neutral balance engine - the 302 uses either a 28 oz or 50 oz external balance on the flex plate (depends on the model year of the 302). If you use a 240 flex plate on your 302 (and it will bolt up), it will shake the bearings out. When you get your 302 flex plate, count the number of teeth on your 240 flex plate ring gear (either 157 or 164). Make sure that the 302 flex plate ring gear has the same number of teeth or the starter won't mate up. I did this swap on my 73 F100 more than 10 years ago and have been very happy with it. While the 302 is not the torque monster like a 390 or 460 in an F100, with the torque multiplication you get from a C4, it does fine - a nice balance of gas mileage and power.
1973's right about the flywheel, but it is an easy swap I had a '79 F100 that came with a 300/3spd/smallrear axlew/2.79 gears in it. After it had about 200k on the clock the 6 slipped a bearing. I then up-graded to a 351Ww/FMX changed the column and added power steering, even with the 2.79 gears the truck was very quick but only got about 9mpg no matter how I drove it, but it was alot of fun, good luck on your swap
