Swapped a 390 for a 351W in a 68'

I ran into alot of surprises when I did the swap. Had to move motor mount towers forward, had to use electric fan because i had no clearance for standard fan, I also converted to C6 from 3 spd std, installed power steering components then added a brake booster. fun project. runs great. post questions if you have them and i can tell you what worked for me.

Hey popeye,
I'm going to start the same swap this weekend. I'm gonna take my time with it but have some questions about the exhaust, the shifter linkage, drive shaft etc..

How did the exhaust hook-up to the manifolds and did you use the stock manifolds?
My truck has a C6/390,I think I'm gonna use a C4 but, I haven't located the tranny yet. Will all the linkage work? Will the drive shaft hook-up the same or will it have to be modified?
The 351W I have has about 50k on the rebuild but it's first home was a Police Detectives P.I. I've seen on another forum that the only real differences in these 351W's and a regular one was the extra oil cooler and this one is from an 89' Crown Vic.
The car was given to me and I haven't actually gotten it home yet probably Thurs.
But, I think this car has the Variable Venturi 2-bbl.
The engine in the car runs great bad tranny (AOD) So should I change this Intake and carb for a more conventional set-up or just leave well enough alone?
I'd like to keep the serpentine belt and the power steering pump, alt and a/c compressor
( My 75 F-100 ranger xlt has Air and I was hoping to try to make the accesories from the 351 work.)
If there is anything that I should watch out for from the start..well, I haven't actually started yet so telling me now would be the perfect time!!
Thanks for all your help!!
HAM

You're sure it's a 351? I didn't think they put the AOD behind a 351w.

It is A 351w for sure! You've got to remember it's not coming from a truck if that makes a difference Thanks Pfogle

Yes, it may have the ford CFI system on it.. If it is the 2bbl VV then scrap it and put a real intake and carb on it. THat will help power wise. Being that it's in a PICV then it's probably already got a decent cam and fuel system.. Are you going to try to swap in the injection too?

I don't really know the Particulars of this factory set-up.
Does it have injection and a carb?
If so I'd like to put the computer in the old truck too.
That'd be a pretty cool setup right?
I'd really like to find out if I can use all of the PICV accessories, alt, pwr steering and a/c

You should be able to. If it's carbed it is indeed the VV, or a feedback 2bbl. If it's CFI it should be pretty neat. They weren't the best in the world but they did work. It could even be MPFI like the trucks all were by '89.

That 351W/AOD is an 89 only thing. Lots of guys have used Mustang headers for the 351W in their trucks. I know it fits in a 2wd, not sure on the 4wd.

Unless somebody swapped the MPFI out and the carb on that 351W, it should be fuel injection. I'm pretty sure they only used the CFI on Escorts... thats the only cars that I have seen it on.

I've got a 2wd
I'll give the Crown Viki a good going over when I get it home but as for now I don't have clue what I've got.
I just know I've got a low mileage 351w w/ no tranny for my 1975 F-100 Ranger XLT
and I want to GO,GO,GO
Maybe even FAST!

i used ford factory stainless mustang shorty headers off of a 302 and had to movethe engine tower mounts up a hole in the frame to make clearance for the power steering gear box. The drive shaft had to be cut 6 inches due to the C6 being longer than the 3 spd. also the trany crossmember was shifted forward along with the motor mounts and the differnece in trany mount position. when i converted to the auto i had a steering column on standby from an Fe series 69 with P.S. well the linkage does NOT havethe same ratio with the set up I am running. To get in reverse the shifter reads "N" and so on..cannot get into First. So i am converting to a Lokar Truck Floor shifter. HAd to run the elec fan because of moving the engine towers. some may have found an easier way. or not... I did it my way. the C6 moves the truck great though! ASk more Q's if you have them.

PI 351's were carbies. My friend had a 91, at least it was the boxy style, that was a retired copper.

I thought it would be EFI for sure, but not so.

I didn't think cop cars were exempt from emissions testing.... maybe they are.

it's a different setup for those cars.
On the crown vic forum that I checked out there was a thread about the Variable Venturi's being an in between stage from carbs to EFI and that 86' through 90' maybe 91' had this setup. (the 89' i have been given is definately the boxy body style but it has rounded corners)
I haven't gotten the car home yet to check all this out but , I'm sure they had emissions too, c'mon Mat72 you know that there are a lot of carbed motors from all the manufacturers that had Carbs and emissions.
My truck on the other hand is 30 years old and considered a classic vehicle and not required to have emissions in my state(SC)

After 83/84 the DOT and EPA pretty much put a halt to anything that couldn't be tested with a scanner of some sort.
