My Truck

I have a 88 F-250 351 engine. Ever since I bought it (used) It has had a power problem. It just dosen't have the power it should It wont even hold 65 on the highway in cruse control. It also gets treble millage, about 9 arond town and it goes down to 8 on the highway anyhow....I have noticed that when its cold out (below 10 degrees) when I just start it up and go it has the power that it should have but as soon as it starts to warm up It loses it.Maybe someone could help me out with this problem. Any advise would be greatly apreciated. Thanks Rick

Rick ,
Start with the tune up basics . I got the impression from reading your post that maybe you have a timing problem . How many miles on your truck ? Check to see that the timing is set correctly and whether the timing is advancing as you increase the rpm's .

Thanks but I have cheacked that and it is in great shape there.......Its computer controled an I no little about them. I assume that there is something that tells the engine how warm it is and ajusts the fuel mixture. (fuel injected of corse).I have thought this because when its cold it runs great and as it warms up it losses all its power. Now if the computer allways thought the engine was cold when it was warmed It would feed it more gas than it should and make these simptomes. But theres probly more to it than this....lol. there allways is with these darn computers

RTK64, The coolant temperature sensor performs the task you mention. If it reads the engine is cold it will keep the fuel mixture rich. Also have you checked the thermostat. Does the truck seem to warm up OK on the gauge. Same thing if the thermostat is staying open the motor wont warm up and again send the wrong signal to the computer, keeping the fuel mixture to rich.

I have the exact same problem with my '92 F150 4x4 with the 302 (5.0). I really can't see it being dirty fuel injectors. Why would it have power when it's cold? It's still getting fuel! I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body without results.(although it did idle better with clean throttle body) I'll post again when I try somethin else
