determining chevy axle ratio

the rear end in my dads 89 chevy just went out and we found another truck that we could get an axle from. it's a 97 chevy.

is there any way to determine the rear axle ratio besides jacking up the truck and counting the spins of the tires vs. the driveshaft? i got the VIN number off both trucks and looked for a way decode it on the internet, but I never found one that could tell me the axle ratio.

is this what you meant to post?

since the oldest codes they have is 98, will it work for both the 97 and 89?

what would you use these for, the VIN number?

Look in the glovebox for a 'sticker' with the different codes on it. The 'sticker' is usually on the glovebox door. This is/are the build code(s).

If no one has been in to the rear end before there should be a small tag on one of the bolts that hold the cover on. this tag will be about 1 inch long and ti will have the ratio.

As for the glove box tag I hope your has the code and ratio on it. My Chev.. only has a tag that has about 50, 6 digit numbers and the dealer can't tell me what they are!

If the truck can't be driven you can pull the cover off the rear end and look for the part number stamped on the ring gear. It will be on the out side in view when the carrier is turned. You can look up the GM number or in front of that number will be 2 two digit numbers like (42 11) If you divide this out it come to 3.818... or 3.83. In the case of a friends truck (I think it was 32 11) or 2.909 or 2.93.

The RPO codes in the glove box should be three digit, alpha-numeric. All axle codes start with the letter "G."" Paint codes start with numbers, two digits followed by a U or a L. Trim codes are also numeric, followed by a letter.

G80- Locking Diff

most common truck codes:

GU6-3.42
GT4-3.73
GT5- 4.10

GM used to have separate stickers that told you what the options were in plain English. My 86 GMC had a sticker in the glove box that said "2.73 non-locking axle".
