Mono Amp for Speakers?

I just bought an MTX 421D mono channel amplifier. I know these are generally used for subs, but i'm hoping to hook up a pair of speakers to it. Is this possible or will I need a two channel amp? I'm new to the audio scene so any help or tips on installation would be great too. Thanks guys (and gals).

As long as your wattage and resistance values are ok with both ends.

Mind you, it will work, but it won't be the best sound, because it's mono. There will be no differentiation on either side of the vehicle.

I'm assuming you'll drive two front speakers, which are probably 4 ohms each.

So, make sure the speakers are rated to work at 2 or 8 ohms (parallel or series), and you should be fine.

You have one other major issue to deal with. Most mono Class D amps, such as yours, have limited bandwidth capabilities. Your amp, for example, has a very limited frequency bandwidth of 20-200 hz. Great when used only as a bass amp. Attrocious as an amp powering a set of mids/tweets. You're going to be getting very, very, very little musical information coming from those speakers. Your amp is (and was) designed specifically for subs.

Thanks

Thanks for all the help guys. I ordered a 2 channel amp and it should be coming in sometime soon. I'm selling the other one on Ebay, so it should all work out ok. Any tips for instally an amp, where have other people put theirs?

Well, if you are driving the Wienermobile, then the best place is probably underneath the plastic relish.

But, you probably drive a ford pickup......

Let us know what year and cab style it is, and I'm sure there is plenty of info to be had here.

It's a 94 F-150 Reg. Cab. I'm planning on putting it behind the bench seat on the back wall of the cab. The speakers I'm installing are outdoor speakers which I'm keeping in a special spot in my toolbox. I'm just afraid the amp may not get enough air to cool off, I'd rather not set fire to my truck, ya know? Would this spot be fine or should I find somewhere else. Thanks again.

As long as there is about an inch of space for air to pass, you shouldn't have any major problems. If the amp gets too hot, it will turn itself off for a period of time. If you find that happening, its quite simple to install a small electric fan onto it, to ensure good air flow.
