That ta Boy Larry...Make em all hotrods!!! I had to Laugh at Les when I talked to him again today....He said he has about a 3 to 4 week turn around..

And he doesnt need to advertise.. He does alot of Race Cars..and its all word of mouth... He has a 5 Axis Milling Machine in there..I forgot to ask..how much is done by hand and how much was donr by Machine??

Hey, Russ. I found the flow data...it helps to be on the right website!!!

Why does no one have any flow data for C1AE-A FE heads???? I have a set of home ported ones on my 428, but have no idea of even stock flow, so can't even guess what the flow might be!

I might pull them off and get them flowed, since I still have structural and body work to do before it is on the road. We'll see.
Thanks for the info.

Well Putt, I think back when these motor's were really being built as hotrods..Nobody really paid attention to flow #s......They just ported as they new how..and ran them that way....

I remember back in the mid 70's when we built the Altered....I dint know how to port..and my Buddy had only ported Motorcycle heads...So I bought a case of beer and He did the Hogging out ,and I did the Polish work..And Hey!! It worked..

We still dont know today what they flowed..even in L.A. at that time..there was only a hand full of flow bench's..and it cost and arm and a leg to have someone flow test them then...

That sounds like the way I ported my C7AE-A's!

Hey Russ who is doing the heads for ya? That's a good price. I'm looking to get mine done but everyone round me is in the $1000 range. Thanks, G.

Hey Russ, I ran some numbers through DD2k for ya again.

With:
Ported C4's, 2.09/1.73" valves
.041" fel-pro gasket and about 10:1 compression
Dual plane intake
Crane 344561 cam
Large tube headers, mufflers
870cfm carb
In a .030" over 390
I'm showing 465hp @ 6500rpm, 429ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 316ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

I've got some recommendations for you. Try this:

Ported C4's, 2.09/1.73" valves
.018" shim gasket and about 10.7:1 compression
Single plane intake (think Victor)
Crane 349521 roller cam
Large tube headers, mufflers
870cfm carb
In a .030" over 390
I'm showing 607hp @ 6500rpm, 533ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 377ft-lbs @ 2000rpm - How do you like THAT!

Yeap Kurt, Those are some Kick Butt #s allright..lol..

Just for grins....

30 over 390
CompCams .567/.567 280/288 dur... Adv.. 232/237
Timing @ .006 IO 34* IC 66*
EO 78* EC 30*
2" open Headers
use the Full ported C4's for ref.
Holley 870
Victor Single plain (race)
CR 10.25 to 1

See what you come up with on that??

Thanks,
Russ

Is that a roller cam, solid, hydraulic, what? I couldn't find it listed on the Comp Cams website.

Ok with that cam in 390 you're looking at 521hp @ 6500rpm, and 485ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 365ft-lbs @ 2000rpm.

With Crane's wonderfull 343941, you'd get 519hp @ 6500rpm, and 489ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 380ft-lbs @ 2000rpm.

2hp? I'd save my money.

Keep in mind I am running these simulations with the 2.09 / 1.73" valves you talked about.

Guys, about those 1.73 exhausts......

Gentlemen, I really like all of these horsepower and torque calculations, it helps some folks understand just what the old FE is capable of. But we need to keep in mind the big 1.73 exhaust valve hits the cylinderwall on a 390 + .060 bore ( 4.110 ). It happens at about .350~.400 lift, at least it did in an engine I checked with 1.73 ex valves in some D2TE-AA heads. You have to notch the crap out of the top of the bores, and you'll probably need to enlarge the valve notches on the pistons, as well. Do-able, but they won't fit unless you do. The 1.65 ( 428CJ size ) exhausts fit just fine. DF, on the boss' computer while he is at lunch (Hehe! )

I was kinda wondering about that. One of those combinations I hadn't considered yet.

Anyway, changing the exhaust valve back to a usable size (1.65) and using Russ's 10.25:1 compression ratio we get the following out of my simulations:

Russ's custom cam:
514hp @ 6000rpm, 483ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 361ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

The 941 cam:
514hp @ 6000rpm, 487ft-lbs @ 5500rpm, and 380ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

The 349521 roller cam:
593hp @ 6500rpm, 524ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 373ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

And just for kicks, the Crane 349521 roller cam and 10.7:1 compression with the shim head gasket:
603hp @ 6500rpm, 532ft-lbs @ 5000rpm, and 378ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Russ: When you get those flow numbers to me, these numbers will get a whole lot more accurate.

Well Because of the small chamber of the C2 heads, they will have to be un-shrouded..
And the block right now is supposed to have a dished piston in it to keep the comp at about 10 to 1.with the small chambered heads...

Buy I also had not thought about the Cylinder Notching..Good point DF...

But I still like the Idea of 500= HP on a single carbed all Iron FE!!! lol..

Notching...that was the one point I kept in mind when doing the heads on my 428. I did not go with the largest size (2.17?). I kept them 2.13?(man, too long ago to remember all these specs). Since the MR heads are meant for 427 bore, I kept the valve size down a couple notches to clear the std bore 428. I think some of the loss of big flow numbers is part of this. Not that they are lacking big time, but I think I could have done better with even bigger valves.

Russ........did they even MAKE a single 4bbl intake for an FE??
I like keeping Holley in business... 2 on here, 2 on here, another 2 on here......

Yeah Larry, I dont think I'll go the 1.730's after thinking about Notching...I'll just have les Do the Full Monty Port and Polish and run the 2.090" intakes and the 1.650 Exhaust Valves and call it good....lol....Hell that will still give me about 500hp +or- and still good TQ..for an all Iron piece of FoMoCo....lol..

And dont get me started on the dual quads!!! I have 1700cfm + going on the Big motor.. But thats only a cruiser on the weekends and some track time...But the Truck now...I'll probably drive that after every payday until the money runs out??LOL....

I have thought about a Tunnel for it...But with that weight, I would have to run to high of stall just to get it to move... 4500lbs for the truck compared too 3200lbs for the stang (with me in it) Big Difference... I wonder if my Uncle up in Michigan still owns his Atlantic Richfield Distributorship?? LOL.. Oh well..

Russ
