I want to install foglights on my '97 F150. I was wondering if I have the wiring harness for the foglights and where do I find it? Also, do I have to take out my stock light switch and put one designated for foglights in?
Yea, the wiring should be there already under the truck near the bumper. The headlight switch with the foglight option pulls out and then turn to turn on the foglights. E-bay usually has them
If I were you i would run an aftermarket switch and hide it. I have a 99 f-150 and i want my fog lights on when i want them on so i bought a lighting kit(switch, real, wiring) for $20. I ran the switch in the cubbie hole, and i ran the (+) lead for the lights in the relay box under the hood, you have to take the factory relay out, and i found the terminal that goes to the light and hooked it up, so if i want to hook up the fog lights factory, all i do is pop in a relay, about 3 seconds of work!
You're probably right. My parents have a '97 Expedition that has foglights. Maybe I can look at that and try to determine where my harness is. If that doesn't work, it's okay. No big deal.
I was gonna put on a black grille guard with 2 driving lights on the front anyways. I like how they look.
If your vehicle is a 4x4, it may have the harness, whether or not it had the lights from the factory. My 98 had the wiring harness already there. All I had to do was install the lamps in the bumper and replace the headlight switch with one that would turn on the fogs when pulled out. The harness was attached to the support for the radiator and AC condenser behind and below the lights on each side.
If it is a 4x2, I doubt whether it has the harness as fogs were not available from the factory on a 4x2.
If there was a harness for the foglights, it sure ain't there. I looked all over and I didn't find it.
So that leads me to believe that I don't have it. Any other ideas?
Sorry, I really expected it to be there like it was for mine. Ford seems to run most of the wiring for options whether they are on the vehicle or not. When I bought the fog lamp kit from Ford for my 98, it had the wiring harness in it, but I did not need it. You might try a junk yard for a 97-98 F150 that has the fogs and pull the harness and light switch from that. If you are strictly going with aftermarket, then you would go with whatever wiring it says to put in.
I keep reading about going to the junk yard and pulling the fog light harness. I find that it is part of the engine harness and also runs into the engine compartment fuse box. How do you know what to take out to make your instalation work?

An alternate foglight plan involves a kit offered by PIAA that allows some of their smaller lights to mount in the holes just outboard of the front license plate. Not factory, but the factory lenses and bulbs don't offer the strongest light in any event.
I forgot to say that my truck is a XL. Since it's a XL, Ford must not have put it in. They must have figured nobody would want to put foglights on. But I have also seen a few F150 XL's with factory foglights. I think it's a random thing. But I could be wrong on that.
I had a ford mechanic showed me were
my DRL relay was located and right there was a female plug that he said was the fog light connection. Ford just has one lighting harness and if you by a 4x4 you get the fog lights and if it is a 2x4 then all you get is the plug and a light switch with out the fog light section.
Its up under the drivers side wheel well
