The Pertronix point replacement kit is very popular. It is simple to install, inexpensive, and reliable.
There is a module that goes where your points are now and an 8 magnet thing that goes over the dist cam.
Once you have the Pertronix unit install you can replace the coil with their high voltage FLAME THROWER coil and then you can open you spark plugs gap up to about .05". It will make a noticable difference to how your truck starts and runs.
I have pertronix on another vehicle and can't complain. It is also the least expensive system that I'm aware of. Crane cams makes an optical system that folks like and it is also inexpensive. MSD makes units as well.
Pertronix owners beware, They are my Ignition of chioce, I am happy with the simplicity, BUT!!!
My buddy pulled my pos cable with the engine running,,,,, an old school check of the alternator working, and when he reconnected it with the engine running it spiked the ign unit and smoked it, game over for the ignition. Other than the friend factor I have no complaints or problems with the Pertronix.
There's always some one different, i'll chime in. Cranes XR 3000 with LX-91 packs a good punch, ran Allison for years without and problems, Crame purchased them and called it their XR 700. Optical trigger systems don't get false magnetic signals. This is a inductive system not capacitive discharge.
XR300 can handle higher current coils than XR700, cost a little more than Pertronics.
