I have managed to somehow crack one of my exhaust manifolds on my 91 F-150 4.9 L. I need to know how big of a pain in the *** it is to remove and replace them. My Haynes manual is very short of info on this. Also, I need to know where to get them for a decent price. O'Rielly Auto Parts has both front and rear manifolds for $240.00. Is this a good price or should I go with Headers?
Adam ,
The intake and exhaust manifolds share bolts on the 300 . Its not too hard to remove them ...getting them back together requires a little more patience . You can hang the exhaust manifolds on their own bolts while you position and reinstall the intake . Have a good torque wrench and be very careful tightening the bolts and torque them in the proper sequence .Its about a 2 hr job with the right tools . I think Clifford Performance Parts make headers for your engine. Good luck ,

REPLACING MANIFOLDS INVLOLVES, FIRST UNBOLTING, THE PIPE FROM THE COLLECTOR, REMOVE ANY EGR TUBES OR SMOG PUMP TUBES, AND FINALLY UNBOLT IT FROM THE MOTOR, YOU MAY HAVE TO REMOVE ANY THING THAT WOULD BE A CLEARANCE PROBLEM, THAT WOULD KEEP YOU FROM GETTING THE MANIFOLD OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD.
HERES THREE OPTIONS TO GO WITH AS FAR A REPLACING THEM...1. FIND A DECENT SET OFF A JUNK TRUCK IN THE JUNKYARD(cheapest option) 2. GET BRAND NEW MANIFOLDS(like you said 240.00)
3. HEADERS( i recommend theses, youll get more power) THIS INFO SHOULD HELP YOU
P.S. EXAUST MANIFOLDS ARE LEFT AND RIGHT, NOT REAR AND FRONT.
OH HOW STUPID AM I? I THOUGHT YOU HAD A V8, YOUR RIGHT ON A 6 THE MANIFOLDS ARE REAR AND FRONT, SORRY, ALL THIS INFO I GAVE YOU WOULD BE MORE USEFUL ON A V8, SORRY
I FEEL STUPID
Don't forget you have to remove the alternator air pump, and the bracket, as the bracket covers the first bolt of the front exhaust manifold. Buy that stuff on EBay
first off, if its an early 90s truck, and not early 80s, your in the wrong forum
BUT......
Im assuming based on the statement "front and back" that you do indeed have a 90s truck and have FI...... the fuel injected manifolds are not far off from what headers would be performance wise, based on what Ive been told.
IMO this thread needs to be moved to the inline forum, you'll get more specialized help there...
