Hi there. You guys are great. I have a 79 F1504x4. I just put a new oil pan gasket in and when I reinstalled the oil pump the rod that goes up into the motor I seemed to miss the hole!! I took the dist off and saw that the rod is crooked. Tonight I will either tear into the oil pan or intake manifold. Can I remove the rod from the top if i take off the intake manifold? I would rather remove the intake instead of the oil pan. Please help. Thanks, Troy
Which engine? I believe that the FE series engines will require the removal of the heads to remove the intake manifold. Maybe try to use a magnet to catch the oil pump shaft.
sorry. It is a 351m and I can see the rod it is just crooked. I am hoping the hole that the rod needs to go in is part of the intake manifold. Looks like I could just lift the intake straighten the shaft and set the intake back down. What do you think? Thanks,Troy
On my 400 there is a collar on the oil pump shaft to keep the shaft from coming up the distributor hole when you pull the dist. If you did indeed have it fall out the oil pump, I don't think you'll have enough room to pull it up and place it into the oil pump. But you can try the magnet trick, or maybe a socket with grease in it, hopefully it'll hold the shaft enough till it seats in the oil pump.
i think you will have to remove the oil pan.if the magnetic trick doesn't work(drop the oil pan and turn it to the side out of the way towards the passenger side)..if you do you will be able to see the oil pump and shaft.if its not in the right hole(where you can see it looking down the distributor hole)you will have to unbolt the oil pump and reinsert it into the pump.and get the shaft in the right place.you really need to check that the pump drive shaft has the collar like bouts mentioned.other wise if you have to lift the distributor to get it in the right place, the shaft will possible fall out of the pump.the collar goes up towards the distributor hole.i don't think you can do it be removing the intake manifold.double check.good luck
"I can see the rod it is just crooked"
where can you see the rod from?do you have the timing cover off?the onle place the rod goes is from the distributor to the pump
the shaft may be i the right place..you may have broken a roll pin on the distributor.look at the distributor.take the cap off.then rotate the bottom gear and see if the rotor is turning
looking down the dist hole on the manifold I can see that the pump shaft didnt make it through the second hole. The intake being the first big hole then the smaller hole inside where the shaft should be but it isnt it is off to the side. I wish I could take off the intake, pull the shaft out and drop it in the hole going to the pump. The coller on the rod might pose a problem with this though.
"looking down the dist hole on the manifold"
something is not right..the distributor hole on a 351m does not go through the manifold...it's on the block in front of the manifold
you can not get to the shaft from the intake you have to pull the oil pan and pump if it is not located in the smaller hole where you can drop the distributor onto the shaft..can you post a picture
Dont pull the intake . As said already, the intermediate oil shaft goes thru the block where the timing cover is. Take a long handle 5/16 nutdriver and a long straight 1/4 in. blade screwdriver. Use the SD to try to work the shaft toward the center of the hole. If you can get the ND on it, it will center it up. If it wont stay centered, then it gets complicated ,
