My wife just called. The check engine light came on in our '01 SD and the engine cut off. It restarted and ran for a few minutes then cut off again. Now, it will start and run for 2 or 3 seconds. Any ideas?
CMP (CaM Position sensor), also know as a CPS, its a $100-$150 dollar part (you can get it cheaper and in International dealer instead of ford), that is the classic symtom and is a common problem with the 7.3 PSD. it is located at about 10 o-clock on the front of the motor and is heald in with a 10mm bolt. it is easier to get to if you take the engine drive belt off

If this is such a widely known problem with these engines, why hasn't Ford recalled them, or come up with a CPS that holds up? Maybe one not made in China or Mexico.
how often do these buggers stop working? also, about how long does it take to replace with standard hand tools?
When ever they feel like it. Seriously some guys get 100,000 miles out of the first one some are on thier 5th or 6th by that mileage. Thats why carrying a spare is a good idea. As far as changing it out about 5 mins with a 10 mm wrench and maybe a couple of small flathead screwdrivers to help coax it out of its hole.

If your feeling lucky sometimes you can get them on Ebay pretty cheap. Just a little tidbit for some of the new guys who may not know, there are 2 part numbers for the CPS, one covers up to a certain time in 97 I think, and the other is for the later trucks ( check Steve Baz's website I think it has the exact change over and pns ). Anyway, either pn will work in a pinch, so if you can only get the "wrong" pn for your truck and need to get it going the get the "wrong one". They are dimensionally identical, the only difference being the metal used in the plug contacts, using the "wrong" pn could eventually lead to corrosion in the plug, not a good thing. So if you need to use the "wrong" pn to get your truck going, you should switch it out for the "correct" as soon as possible to avoid future problems. Just keep the other one as a spare.
