I was considering buying an Ex, but everyone including the Ford dealers talked me into the 2005 Z71 Suburban. Now I'm wondering what I missed out on ! Can anyone tell me about what you can put in the back of one of these behemouths ? I.E., will it haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood with the 3r row seat removed, can the 3rd row seat even be removed and if so how easily ? I know many of you will probobly say I need a truck instead of an Excursion, but the Chevy just seemed like it was more people freindly and the excursion seem like they have more cargo area.

Thanks, Chet
That sounds about right.
No 4x8 with the thrid seat removed in the Ex. You gotta lay the 2 row seat(s) down.
3rd seat lifts out but is a tad on the heavy side. Still is easy to do though. It is not split 50/50 like the Tahoes and Suburbans(?) and doesn't have headrests or integrated seatbelts.
I actually don't bother removing the 3rd seat anymore, I just fold everything down. Its a little harder to get that first sheet of plywood in but after the first its a piece of cake. It would be even easier if the spare wasn't there, with it gone there would be several inches of clearance on each side of the ply, with it in it just fits. The seat is easy to remove but weighs a ton, fold it forward, lift the release handle, pull it out on its wheels.
I also don't remover the 3rd row seat to haul a 4x8 sheet of anyting. Heck, I have been known to not drop the second row either. Just slide it right in and over.
I do agree with the spare tire comment. The fit is a tad tight with the tire in there....but it still fits either way.
Yeah, I'm going to have to replace the gasket around the cargo door opening. I've torn in it a few places when sliding plywood in and catching the gasket.
Gonna wish you had the KING OF SUV's when needing to haul a load. I had suburbans and this excursion will out haul both of my past trucks. The suburban does drive nice but mine did not hold together like it should have
When I need to haul plywood or sheetrock I just fold the 3rd seat over and lower the 2nd row seats and lay the spare tire flat in the cargo area. Lots of room then and good support as well. I have hauled a dozen sheets of plywood and a hundred 2x4's at one time. This rig rocks!
Sorry to hear you bought a Sub. I had a 98, what a problem child, it got homesick for the dealer often and would spend days there. No such issues with the Excursion.

I've loaded wood up in both my Burb and my Ex, the larger stuff fit in the Ex, but it was tight.
My older (87) burb swallows the 4x8 sheets up like it's nothing, tons of spare cargo room in that beast.
But then again it is a beast and not near as refined as the Ex is.
I looked at a newer Burb before settling on the Ex, it was nice, more road friendly than the Ford, but lacked the overall room.
I can settle for the less refinement if I get all that extra cago space over a new Burb. Plus i have the diesel and that makes up for anything the Burb has.
I go back and forth whether to trade in the X for a Super Duty or not. I'm in the middle of a remodel job and it seems the interior of the X is getting the short end of the deal. Last month I had 52 sheets of 23/32 roofing sheet, 10 sheets of 1/2 sheetrock and 2 sheets of 5/8 sheetrock plus a couple boxes a roofing nails, sheetrock screws, mud, etc. I have no clue what that weighed, but the X couldn't tell that stuff was there. I've filled that thing with enough R30 attic insulation for 2000 sq feet and R13 wall stuff for 800 sq feet. Just remove the 3rd row and lay down the 2nd row and it's a truck with a camper shell and a nice interior.
