Two cats...

I was looking at my exhaust sytem today, and wondered if I have two cats, or just one. Two Pipes come from the headers and go into a box that only has one pipe going out. This one bigger pipe goes into another box that Im sure is a cat. Then it goes to my muffer and out. Is this first box just a Y splitter to combin the two sides together? If it is a cat, will I still pass inspection if I put a new, single high flow cat on?
Thanks

they are both cats. Don't know if you'll pass emmisions or not, might check with an inspector, and I'm sure someone else on here can tell you from experience. I'm lucky enough not to have to pass emmisions where I am now.

Katt,

It really depends on the state that you live in and how strict they are on the smog laws. The federal ruling does not allow you to remove a cat without first getting written permission from a qualified mechanic stating that the cat is malfunctioning and then it needs to be replaced with a similar functioning cat and in the same location.

I dumped the cat on my '82 and put on two hi-flow cats along with my true dual exhaust in North Carolina. The inspectors never even questioned a problem. However, if I would have tried this in California, I probably would have received a fine.

I live in Utah. Is it legal to replace them myself? I would like to combine the two sides with a Y pipe, then go to a single 3" cat and flowmaster muffler. I've read that if the vehicle has over 50-60,000 miles and/or is over 5yrs old that it is legal to replace them. Is this true? I have 95,800 miles and about 12yrs old. If I do replace it myself, how do I disspose of the old cat?
Thanks much

Well, I live in NC and I removed my cat and replaced it with two hi-flow DynoMax cats (dual exhaust), but when I read the federal mandate, it stated that you needed written agreement from a certified mechanic that your cat was bad...However, I have not run into anyone here that is concerned with that statement. I would guess Utah is a pretty loose on their smog tests. I even tried talking to some inspectors before I removed my cat and I got such a variety of answers that I just gave up and did my own thing.
