Auto trans not going back in! HELP!
I've been working on a friends 1986 F-150, straight six with auto trans. Pulled the auto and replaced the rear main seal. When we attempted to put it back together, it aligned up, but didn't want to go back together - there was a gap between the block and the auto (about 1/4 inch). We used the bolts to bring them together. Then tried to start it after getting it all back together and there is NO movement at all. Is there anything we're missing? Is there any special hidden tricks to get them to mate back up correctly? Could the flywheel have been put on backwards? We can turn the crank and move the flywheel until we tighten the bolts down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ASAP!

is the starter trying to engage the flywheel? also the trans not bolting up easily is not a good sign.It sounds to me like you got the torque converter in wrong. What happens is the ears on the torque converter were not correctly in the front pump slots .when you put the tranny in, the torque converter should be turned in the front pump until you feel a couple clicks, it will go inside of the transmission bellhousing until it is recessed a good bit, then after bolting up the transmission bellhousing to the engine you then line up the holes in the flywheel with the torque converter studs push them thru and bolt them down.
