Ford PowerLoc Question

For the past coupla months, I've been watching ebay for Sterling 10.25" closed/positrac differentials. I've noticed two types: one has a cylindrical carrier with only one small hole in the side. It's maybe 3/4" in diameter (big enuff to stick your thumb in) and you can look through the hole and see the clutch plates. The other type has a much larger opening (almost like the open/non-posi units) on one side and the clutch plates are tucked in out of sight on one end. What's the difference? Also, are clutch plate kits still available for these old units? I'd like to put one in a 1985 F250 6.9. The additional traction would be really helpful, but I don't understand why there's any difference in what should be a standard production component. Thanks for any light you guys can shed!

Dave
