Tin shields under rockers, use them???

I picked up my heads from the shop and I mentioned that I needed rocker assemblys. He said he had a good used set for $20. When he dug out the rockers there was some tin shields with them. He said they go under the rockers, but mine didn't have them. He threw them in with the rockers. If you don't use them wouldn't that change the preload on the lifter? Should I use them?

They are to direct the oil back to the holes and down into the crankcase. Yes use them.

Yes, but the amount would probably not affect anything. I would recommend their installation also.

I thought they were to help keep oil out of the valve guide area, as well as direct it to the drain holes. Yes, go ahead and use 'em. They dont hurt anything.

I would use them they direct the oil to the oil drain back holes in the heads and prevents excess oil from hitting the valve guides.

There are two types of oil deflectors, early had long fingers, later no fingers. The long finger type flow oil back into the head drains better which helps reduce the amount of oil flow thru the drain at the rear of the head. For preload difference that tin is minimal in thickness. Adjustable roller rockers, the only way to run.

What intake are you using?

I recently installed a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and the longer finger style shields originally from my Fairlane would not fit. It has to do with the way the material is casted for the push rod tubes. Also I bought some billet rocker stands, end stands and spacers (instead of springs) and they interfere with the shields. I let them off. If you are leaving them off you should consider the thickness (@ .030") as this will affect the lift as the rocker shaft is now that much closer to the cam. Below are some pics with my baffles installed. I had trimmed them to fit and was measuring push rod length (hence the push rod checkers shown), this is when I discovered that the shields would not fit with the intake. Good thing I found that out then as I was minutes away from determining which push rod length I was going to order. I did not take any pics with the shields removed.

Thanks everybody for your help.

Fairlaniac....thank for the pictures, that always helps. Looking at them made me think about something. I have adj. rockers ordered and this will be my first time installing them. Can I bolt them down then install the pushrods useing the adjusters? Or do I need to load them like non-adjustables?

What I do...

...is install the push rods and back out the rocker adjuster screws so the ball is up as far as it can go without falling out. I take the rocker assembly and install it and then turn the screws down until they seat in the push rods loose enough for the push rod to spin. then I go through the procedure of setting the valves.

Setting rocker shafts in place

I forgot to mention that I always set the crank approx. 45 degrees past top dead center. This position has the least amount of valves at lift. Usually the balancer has a "XX" stamped in this location. Setting the crank position to this spot puts less stress on the rocker assembly during assembly.

I used the E'bock RPM manifold, too, but I added the valve gear after the intake manifold was on, so no trimming needed on my shields.

With a little blacksmith work, some round stock to form, the long finger drain back oil deflectors will fit about any head intake combo.
