Sorry for the long post..On my 2001 Ford F250 SPD Auto with super chip installed, I’m having a problem with what I think is the tranny is slipping. The transmission shop in town says all is fine but when I pull my camper up to the mountain I start loosing speed and I start to hear a sound like the transmission winding out in neutral. There are times when the truck is cool from sitting for a long time, I start out and I get a little of the same thing. Warm truck under no load is fine.
I want to get it fixed before it blows something but I don’t know the cause. Now a few months ago, the tranny had a complete flush. They did not tell me to come back and a few days to check the level. Few days later I went on a long trip, with the camper. On the way back I came off an overpass and the truck hit neutral, really bad slip. I stopped and found it was a 1.5 QRTs low on tranny fluid. I went to the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comNAPA</st1:City> store and they gave me the wrong tranny fluid but the place that did the tranny flush said it would not hurt.
Sounds like the shop put the dual use Mercon V in your tranny instaid of Mercon. Not good for your 4R100 tranny and not recommended by Ford.
You need to go back to the shop and find out what fluid was used. Then tell them they need to buy you a rebuild.
Sorry, for the bad news.

But if AMCO Transmissions thinks the tranny is OK, could it just be the fluid? Maybe another flush would correct it? Is there some sort of pump or does the tranny not use one? There are no error codes as well being reported...would there be any error codes since the tranny is computer controlled?
This is a 4x4 and could there be something there causing it?
First, did you have any slippage before you took it in for a flush?
How many miles have you put on it since the flush and change?
Not sure if it would throw codes or not.
I would call back AAMCO and act like you're interested in a change and ask them what fluids they use in when the change flush and change fluid. If they tell you anything but Mercon, they've just admitted they toasted your tranny.
I've had my tranny changed (not flushed) twice since new and each time I had to specifically tell the manager and tech to use MERCON not MERCON V.
Do a search on this and you'll see this is a common mistake made by tranny and Ford shops. Pretty much ends up the same. Toasted tranny.
Being 1 1/2 quarts low shouldn't make your tranny slip as described. Wouldn't hurt to top it off and see, but 99% of the time when you experience tranny slippage immediatley after a flush or change, it's the wrong fluid.
I took it back and they changed the fluid and filter again. They think it was either an air pocket or a bad seal on the filter. Guess I will have to haul and see if it works now.
The pan was clean so would that mean the tranny is safe?
Was your tranny slipping before you took it in for the flush or after?
Clean oil doesn't mean much, especially after a fresh flush. But it's a good sign.
How did the oil smell? Any burnt odor? Did you bother to check the odor before taking it back? Did they tell you what oil they used or did they skirt the issue?
I would see how it works out and be sure to take it back if you have any hint of slippage or problems in the future.
Fluid looked OK. They used Mercon (not Mercon V). I didn't think to smell the fluid prior to them working on it again. I gave it a good run as I was going back to work and did not notice anything wrong...so we will see later this week by pulling the camper back up to the mountain.
