Today, I was driving home, and noticed I could feel more of the road in my steering wheel and didn't think anything about it until I tried changing lanes. So I make it home, and look under there. The belt is there, in good condition for the PS. Fluid level is good, but it looks murky (this is at 11pm so I'm not 100% sure), and everything looks in tact. I know everyone's going to probably say the PS pump or w/e is jacked up.. but I want to know what to look for that's bad on this thing first, maybe I should flush it out too? Suggestions please..
Hmm well my power steering pump went out a few weeks back on my 84, so instead of going through the headach of rebuilding it I just went and bought a new one from autozone for like 40$ and rented a pully removal tool from them for another 40$. They gave the 40 for the tool back after I returned it. So in like 30 min I had a new pump for 40$ and it has a life time replacement warrenty. Just some thoughts if thats what you would like to do.
R&R on the B2 power steering pump is something akin to heart surgery, and while your doing this I would suggest it as a great time to replace belts and hoses. It is just a pain in the butt to reach everything, I even removed the radiator when I did mine so I wouldn't run a ratchet thru it.
whoa you did a lot more work than i did TMyers269. On my 84 I just took the a/c belt off which wasnt too complicated, and then loosened the three bolts on the power steering pump and then after loosening the adjustment nut at the top of the assembly I took the belt off. After that I took the pully removal tool and poped the pully off and when this was done I released the return house on the bottom of the power steering pump (not the one on the side) and let the fluid drain out. when this was done I undid the power steering bolts all the way (there should be three of them on the front) and then twisted the pump in a way that made it easy to remove the outlet line from the side of the pump (you can take the outlet line on the side off before you remove the three bolts at the front, i just found it easy to have it in an positon that i could work with better). The I took the pump out and put the new one in and did it all in reverse. except I think it is wise to bleed the power steering system in order to get all the crap out of the lines. you do this by first buying a whole lot of fluid. then put the whole pump setup back together but leave the return line off (the line at the bottom) and have it placed into a canaster (make sure where the return line plugs into the pump that it is sealed or capped off because if not all the fluid will drain out). Now you have to crank the pump, with the belt off and without the motor runing, to get the old fluid out. Or, with the belt on, bairly get the motor started and turn it off to flush the old fluid out. Be careful doing it with the motor on and belt on, because it will empty the fluid very very very very fast (because the motor revolutions are so fast), and you dont want to run the pump dry because it may get damaged. after you are satisfied it is flushed out enough tighten the return line back up, filler up and off you go as good as new.

What year is yours? On mine, I shouldn't have any problems with it. I have to wait until tomorow to get the stuff, because tomorow is payday from work. I've already replaced belts about.. 2-3 months ago. What I'm going to is install the new PS pump (hopefully that's the problem), and install a Flex-a-lite fan while I'm under the hood. Thanks guys.
87, with Air, maybe it was a booger because of all the rusty bolts, it was just tough to get anything to move and I siezed the opportunity to take care of some other nuisance leaks as well.
Mine's not rusted at all. It's been sitting in the driveway waiting on my paycheck to come. Well I went out there to install it and started to take off the belt.. and then i realized the belt was on there so it looked like I had a belt on, this is why you don't look in the dark. Anyways so tonight I'm going to flush out the fluid, and take the new pump back to autozone and get my $80 back. Thanks guys for the help.
Romer check and make sure eveythine is alined right and you dont have any bad pullies.Belts don't just pop off and if there that new and broke sounds like you got something rubbing the belt.Make sure all the other belts are ajusted right might have streached some since you put them on.JMO

One of the bolts that keeps the belt tight came loose. It didn't just pop off, it got so much slack in it that it wasn't turning the PS pump. I flushed it all out, and now it has new fluid, and I bled it and everything. It turns so smooth now compared to what it was like when I did have PS before.
