Ok, my '03 has a PS cooler, but it's pretty tiny. Does anyone know if this thing really works? Anyone know what max temps for the fluid are permitted without breaking the fluid down? How about a PS temp gauge?
I plan on putting a Tru-Cool on anyway, so perhaps delete the stock PS cooler and use the existing OEM tranny cooler?
Practicality?
Does the PS fluid really get too hot using no cooler or the OEM?
good question.... anybody out there know more than i do... (btw "don't know jack" on this one incase you couldn't figure that out... but i have often wondered about this..)
Someone recently posted that he inadvertantly replaced the stock P/S cooler with a larger one (thought it was the tranny cooler), and the resulting pressure drop messed up his brakes. The hydro-boost system on our vehicles uses the P/S pump to supply pressure for the braking system too.

it should not affect the line pressure w/ more volume or lower temps. maybe the original had a reducer in it to slow down the fluid. i think i will leave it alone and double up on the trans coolers. for now!!!!

probably a good idea... i've heard of tranny's going bad from overheating... but i haven't heard of a ps unit going bad... i'm sure it happens, but not that often...

Don't think I would lose the power steering cooler either. Just add another transmission cooler. The factory transmission cooler isn't that large to begin with. A second, larger one won't hurt a thing (except heater warmup time in the winter) when pulling that big fiver up a long grade.
JMHO, Joe
p.s. I was shocked to find a power steering cooler under there.

Just about every cooler I've seen has a restricted core or outlet for just that reason. I've only tested a few different types of coolers, but all of them have shown a pressure drop.
Even if there is a chance of messin' up the brakes, I'll leave it alone. Brakes are a very bad thing if they don't work.
Oh well, just a thought, I was thinking Johnny needed more gauges.
Johnny, don'tcha need to monitor the charge rate for the batts in yer 5ver?
We still need oil temp & pressure, volts, outside air temp, humidity, etc...
Hahahahahaha

lets see now... i need a post turbo pyro... pre and post intercooler air temp guages... front dif guage... rear dif gauge... amp guage.... volt guage... oil pressure guage... fuel pressure guage... transfer case temp gauge... pre and post tranny cooler guages... lateral g gauge, (incase i decide to "race the truck..!)... roll and pitch gauges, (incase i decide to go rock crawling..!)... geez... did i leave anything out...?

w/ alll that going on i think ur gonna need an inside and outside thermometer and probably a pilots license!!!!
oh yeah... forgot the thermometers.... the digital compass... the gps navigation system... the satilite radio... the seat covers with the built-in massagers... maybe i'd better think about upgrading the alternator while i'm at it... gonna need more juice...!

i think you may need 7 200amp alts like those guys on tv w/ huge 50 K watts of sound in their trucks and vans!!
do not forget the climate controled console for your beer
( i mean youhoo!!) and the climat controlled seats as well. not just for pencil pushers in their bmw's anymore!!
