Emblem polishing

I heard about a guy who polished his emblems with acetone. He said it made them shine with a very high sheen. Is this true??? Is there other alternatives?
I have a 74 F-250 4x4 with fairly oxidized emblems. Is there a way to get the shine back?

I would think acetone would dissolve the glue backing on the emblems.

i used the acetone trick on my emblems to my expedition and it worked great. i masked off the paint around the emblem and used a combo of q-tips and terrycloth to remove all the black paint on the emblem. it took longer than i thought it would just to get it out of all the little corners. after i was done with the acetone i used some chrome polish to shine them up a little. well worth the time. i dont know if it will be able to do any thing with oxidation though
