'83 f150 4x4 5.0L new wires, carb rebuild w/ float & needle/seat electric choke. Previos owner removed air pump. summer or winter, first thing in the morning she fires right up with no pump of the pedal, she idles fine for about 3 min. then the slow decline starts. progressivly it idles rougher and rougher until it dies. severe rich smell! starts hard this time and wont idle until i get on it and blow her out. will start the same proccess all over again. we go through this about 4 times before she'll come up to temp. THEN! when i put in gear she dies again, i have to goose her a bit as i slam it in to gear just to keep it running. once past this point and up to temp she runs great the rest of the day, until the next morning.....#$*@%^

It definetly sounds like you have a problem with the choke opening as the engine warms . Start the truck and let it run as you watch whats going on with the choke . Depending on the temp , the times it takes to fully open will vary . I suspect the the choke linkage is not adjusted properly and possibly the electric portion of it may not be functioning properly .

thanks paul, ijust spoke with someone today that mentioned a temp relay for the choke. i've looked in my haynes manual and it talks of checking for voltage @ the t-stat housing. i'll try this in the morn. i've been trying, at the sugestion of the fella who rebuilt the carb, an incremental adjustment each morning. is there a way to set it up @ "ground zero" and then go from there?
