Fuel Tank Mod...
to make-up for the loss i had a '76 f-350 donor.
i took the electric fuel switch and the rear tank, the tank closest to the rear bumper.
in my research i found that the inside to inside frame rail measurment on my '70 was 2'10".
the rear tank measured at its widest point at 2'-10 5/8".
now, if you have any expierience w/a mig (wire feed) welder then all you have to do is:
FIRST AND THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP!!!!!!!!
drain and use a high pressure washer to clean out all the years of crud.
SECOND: LET SIT FOR AT LEAST THREE DAYS!!!!!-this is to make sure any and all fuel vapors are non-exsisting inside the tank.
THIRD: all you need is to shave off 3/8" from the sides where the machines seemed the 2 halfs together. by doing this you gain 3/4" in clearance.
NEXT:this is where the welding comes in, by shaving off the metal there is going to be leaks!!! just weld the two halfs back up an test for leaks and spot weld accordingly.
LAST: just run the lines hook up the filler by either recessing it into the bed side, or the more ghetto way and go through the flooring inside your bed.
hook up the sending unit and tank selector, (mechanical or electric whatever you choose) and BLAM! there you go. don't forget the tank straps or it's all for nothing!!
this is really easier then you might think. after it sat and air-dried 3 days it took me a couple of hours to slap it up into my truck and since i already had the donor truck, it cost me the price of the local self-serve car wash.
if your mechanical ability is pretty low, or you don't know how to weld,
then i would not attempt this modification.
i cannot stress enough about washing and letting it sit and air dry for at least 3 days! so it doesn't blow up in your face when you arc the welder.
p.s. i hope i didn't upset anyone by explaining this step-by-step process.
like i said earlier "i'm a welder". and i get board alot!!!! when i get board i'll chop something up, just so i can weld it back together (slightly modified of coarse).
again I thank you SO very much for this DIY step by step, you shall be rated accordingly!!!

that made the mod super easy! i could run the cable anywhere i wanted so it would tuck-up under the frame neatly. i also did the power steering at the same time w/the parts from the same '76 donor. i had at least 6 different people try to tell me it wouldn't work, that the steering box wouldn't bolt-up or the shafts wouldn't fit.
the steering box bolted and fit exactly like my stock steering-box, and if i need to replace it, it's about $200 less then buying a '70 steering box! the only thing that was different was the shaft so i just used the one from the '76, worked great!
i could go on and on about what i've done but i type about as slow as my computer is fast! as a matter of fact i've had to stop and take 4 different smoke breaks just to type this!lol!!!
anyway, your very much welcome!
p.s. what are these thread ratings and how do i see mine?
what's the highest/lowest ratings someone could possibly achieve?
can someone be locked out of FTE if there ratings are too low?
