fuel filter fiasco
Didn't get Ranger fuel filter out without destroying the line fitting despite buying the metal tool and the plastic one that looks like a thimble. When I finally pulled for all I was worth after an hour of trying, the spring metal keeper pulled right out with the old filter. There are three little "wings" on the one piece keeper and they are pushed flat when you insert the tool, allowing you to pull the old filter with it's flange over the wings. If the tool doesn't flatten the wings and even one catches the flange you're stuck. It looks like two caught mine and my pulling is all that got it out. I now know how it works but it's too late. I had to cut the fitting off the line and am now going to buy a replacement at Advance Auto Parts. It inserts into the cut end of the fuel line and has it's own release tool built in fot the next filter change. Live and learn.

Yep, for once in my life, didn't take the chance. Read all the posts/threads about changing it, but due to my age (67), didn't want to lay on the ground thinking I wouldn't encounter problems. So let one of the local dealers do it on a promo of a $9.95 oil/filter change. Was watching him during the change, took only 5 minutes. Well worth the cost to skip the hassle. Hope you have better luck next time.
