Well, we decided this morning to go with the Screw. Found a Black one with 5.4, 4x4, power everything (including pedals and rear window), tow package, and running boards for cheaper than the silver one we liked yesterday that didn't have the power pedals or running boards. We are a-plan and am leaving work tomorrow at noon to go finalize everything and take her home. Cannot wait.
as Chris said congrats on the new truck does it have the bed extender with it ?? if not that is one thing I would absolutely have to have makes me wonder how did i get by with out it
Well I am buying my F-150 this week. But am having a hard time deciding on what to get. I have an 8 year old daughter and a lab puppy that will be sitting back there every weekend for a two hour trip to the lake.
For anyone else that went through this decision which cab did you get and why?
Lots of good points made already, but here's my 2 cents worth: I have a 3 hour ride to the lake, but it's just me, my wife up front, and the 47lb. lab mix in the back seat of our '04 Supercab. In parking lots, as someone stated, the "suicide" doors are a pain, because with both doors open with another vehicle alongside, I'm trapped in a tiny space while trying to convince the dog to jump up into the back seat. The dog loves the truck, however, because we built a custom plywood platform with cushion, that allows the dog more fore/aft lounge room than even the Supercab rear seat. Even though the dog is tethered on a very short leash to the right rear child safety restraint, she can still easily lean forward and rest her head on the center console for a little up-close "visit" and pampering on a long ride. The smaller Scab rear window is perfect for our dog to climb up on to hang her head outside at lower speeds. I even installed non-slip safety tread tape onto the plastic window sill, as her paws had a tough time gripping the plastic. The tape keeps her more secure than the bare plastic. One problem: For now I have to remember to disable the rear window switches, as she has unintentionally (I think) lowered the rear power window with her paw,; thank goodness she didn't raise it with her head out. A friend is going to help me permanately disable that rear switch.
Were I to buy another, I would still choose the Scab, but if I had people back there more often, the Screw would be my choice. Good luck!

Supercab all the way. I've had people in the back for long trips and every person said the seats and ride are comfortable. Plus you get the longer bed and better looks (subjectively, of course!!!).
Congrats on the new truck, make sure the PCM is updated before you dive it off the lot.
For those with younger kids (and those to might sell later to one with younger kids.) Most infant car seats do not fit in the supercab unless the driver or passanger is way way up (not drivable). The screw fits my wife, 2 boys, motherinlaw, fatherinlaw, and three dogs (you guess who goes where)
I just went through this very difficult decision two nights ago and ended up purchasing the Screw.
- no kids, but when I do haul passengers the 4 doors are much better
- prefer the solid "B" pillar on the Screw - feels much stronger
- resale value will be more with the Screw - families will want the 4 door
- IMO the Screw looks better balanced than Scab
- If I have gear in the bed and stop somewhere - more room to throw everything in the back seat
- I will forget the $$ diff in short order but will be enjoying the convenience of the 4 door for many years.
The Scab is very nice as well and it was a difficult decision for me....the sales guy and I had the 2 identical 4x4 Lariats (same color, interior, options, etc.) side by side and it took an agonizing 45 mins for me to decide. I really was AMAZED by the Scab's rear windows rolling all the way down....I didn't even know they were operational and still can't belive they roll all the way down...my Lincoln LS's rear windows only went down approx. 3/4....both are nice - just for me - the 4 door makes more sense. And I will be hauling my sportbike in the Screw - but figured the occaisional compromise using the bed extender was better than the compromise of the Scab vs. the 4 doors. Either way these trucks are darn nice!!
I just traded in my 01 S'Crew for an 05 S'cab Flareside. I thought highly of my S'crew and hated to see her go, but the lady who bought it is taking good care of it. It was one of those 1 or 2 vehicles you own in a lifetime that was just about trouble free - no defects or problems. I almost bought another one, but three things made my decision to go with the S'cab.
1. The rear seatback on the 04 & 05 S'crew models is more "straight up" and sits a whole lot less comfortable IMO than the 01 S'crew. Also the 01's seat back folded down and made a flat platform - great for hauling those items that you don't want to get wet in a rainstorm. Sure the 05 S'cab rear seatback is just like the 05 S'crew, but if I am going to have a less comfortable rear seat, then I would just a soon have the S'cab and the extra foot of bed length.
2. The 01 S'crew I had had a bed extender - it was fine for hauling groceries, etc and kept them from sliding to the front. When extended with the tailgate down, it was OK for hauling bulk material (like mulch, etc). But most of the time it was just in the way for hauling lumber, furniture, appliances, ATV, etc. Where you going to store it when you get to Home Depot and its in the way? Mine spent most of the time in my garage as a fairly good "in a pinch" workbench/sawhorse. Point being made - when you need 6.5 ft of bed, then 5.5 won't do.
3. I was not in love with the 04 & 05 styleside bed's looks - call me picky if you want to - but I have never really liked the wide bed look - need something to break up the flat side boxy look. I had a 97 S'cab Flareside and I really liked the way the rear corners curved around and broke up the boxy look. The 01 S'crew still had the stepside/flareside look, but the 05 S'crew went more toward the styleside look.
But all my kids are grown and moved out - just the wife and me - she has a 04 Expedition for vacations, road trips, etc. and we don't need the extra rear seat space. If I was still hauling kids around, then I would probably have gone with the S'crew.
I guess the decision all comes down to what you want/need the truck for and what features are more important to you.
Just one more thought: The 6.5 ft bed 06 S'crews might look tempting, but consider this: The S'cab or S'crew (either one) is enough of a pain in the b**t to try to park with how long they are, the extra foot will only make it worse. It makes me cringe every time I see a nice big Superduty Crew cab with a long bed squeeze into the spaces at the local Walmart. The guy who lays out the parking spaces and lanes in the parking lots probably gets a sick thrill thinking about how he can squeeze 1 or 2 more spaces out of each lane by squeezing us full size vehicle owners in like sardines in a can.
