Oil Restrictor

What is the smallest oil restrictor for cylinder head you have used? I have a 90 but I had an engine builder recommend a 60. What do you guys think? I am going to be running roller rockers so do I need as much oil?

You know, all I've ever heard of using was a 90 holley jet. I have the number 90's in my 390. But I had the valve covers off and ran it, oil spewing out everywhere, overflowed over the side of the head after about 1 minute of idling. In retrospect I would have put in a 80 had I known then what I know now.

Since you're going to be running roller rockers, they might be a little different. You were the one getting the Ersons, right? I'd call them up an see what they say before I did anything. Let us know what they say about it; I'm kind of curious now.

60 should work well. You might want to try a few different sizes to get the best flow. G.

Holley jet #60 is .060" drill diameter, #90 is .104" drill diameter. Area of 1/3 or 3 times, thats alot. I drilled out allen grub screws after they were annealed to .058", they screw into threaded hole (tapped when heads rebuilt). Better oil control as i'm running roller rockers with 1" wide oillite bushings and a HV pump. Plenty of oil as this test is over 243,000 miles long, bushings tight and shaft without any wear.

I know this is hard to answer without seeing but, on the rockers how tight should they be? Mine seemed tight when I put them in the parts washer about a week ago. Now I can rock them side to side slightly. The shafts aren't galled but there could be wear that I can't see.

Mike the shaft on unworn area and worn area as well as the rockers, they will wear oval as all pressures on the bottom. Sounds like your not too bad for wear, i'd limit it to .005" if it were my motor to prevent top end flooding. I'm running less than .002" but I have oillite bushing material, I don't count.

Carl....I went out and looked at the "bottom" of the shafts and they are galled. They are also grooved up pretty bad. I guess I'll have to bite the bullit and buy a new set. Does it ever end???????????

It never ends but the love of working on these old trucks is rewarding as anyone can own a plastic truck. If it's a keeper get adjustable rockers and shafts. Depending on your mileage and if you have unbrellas now would be a good time to change them. They get hard and break up ending in your oil drain back passages, sump with higher oil consumption.
