I found a good 351w from a recycler out of a 96 f-150 and I'm going to put it in my 89 Bronco, I know the exhaust manifolds need to be swapped no problem I 'm going with bassani headers, but will the wiring and fuel rail match up or do I need to put my intake manifold on, or get a new wire harness, or do I need a new computer also, basically is this going to be a pain in the a--?
96 model year engine is mass air injected AND OBD-II computer and software. The fuel injection wiring harness has at LEAST six additional wires in it because EACH injector has its own wire from the computer. In addition, the wiring will include the MAF sensor wiring, MAF sensor, and two additional O2 sensors along with their wiring as well.
If you are just talking about using the long block and swapping in the original fuel injection setup and computer, I do believe the long block should be compatible. I am making the assumption that your truck already has a 351 in it that you are looking to replace. But as far as swapping the whole fuel delivery and onboard computer system, its gonna be a major undertaking.
I can swap over the intake manifold and fuel injection from my old 351 as long as everything will match up, but if I only use the long block I should be ok, I don't want to buy this engine and not be able to return it. I know the 96 has the roller cam will that change anything? is it more hp? Will the c6 transmission mate up fine? Does edelbrock have a good intake manifold and injection rail for that 351?
keep the newer 5.8 complete. dont take anything off it except the dizzy you will want to swap it out with the old 5.8 dizzy you have. you must get the dizzy gears swapped though. because that newer block may have a roller cam and will require the proper dizzy gear. your 89 harness will hook right up to everything that is on that newer motor no problems. I wouldnt use the new wiring and setup because its OBD-11 and really is a pain. does that new motor have all the accessory brackets?
i put a 95 5.8 in mine and had to do the same things. so ask away
Dizzy?? Sorry I'm not familiar with that phrase... No it didn't have the access.. so if I cahnge out the harness will I need to do the computer too. And will the intake maifold work on my 1989?
dizzy = distributor. very important that you use the one from your 89 but with the gear off the 95 motor. keep everything else on the 95 motor , everything. then just use your 89 harness and ecu.
yes it will also the flexplate on your old 351w should be used on the 96. check it out though for cracks and worn teeth. because flexplates are cheap if yours is not in good shape
