OK, looking for help on here again please! My '97 Expy seemed to be running great until I mentioned that fact. Then it decided to act up. Guess I didn't knock on that wood fast enough. Anyway, here's the deal. When I came up to a stop light a couple of days ago the motor idled just fine, but then dropped in RPMs from about 700 to 400is and acted like it was going to die. It popped back up to normal and seemed fine. Well at the next light it did it again and then died. It started right back up and drives fine, but at a stop (while in drive) it bogs down and wants to die. Tapping on the accelerator keeps it running, but something is not right. I've done a search and read that it could be an idle control valve. Maybe even a fuel filter. Just wanted to see if there were any more thoughts.
Thanks!
out of curiousity, how many miles do you have on the vehicle?nomo might be right if you have more than 30k miles on board and haven't changed the air filter.you might want to also change the spark plugs just to make sure you getting a good bang at the cylinders.
Well, looks like I have another project! It has about 117 or 118 K if memory serves. I am unsure as if the fuel filter has been changed. The plugs were changed about 2 years ago so I'm pretty sure they're still OK.
I'll pick up a fuel filter tomorrow along with the "special" tool to change it. From what I've read I'll need one, correct? If that doesn't fix it, I'll try the IAC. Thanks you all!!! I'll let you know what happens.
Changed the fuel filter on Sunday. Seemed to run rough Sunday night, but yesterday morning and this morning it was running great! Hopefully that's all it was. Thanks again to everyone for the tips! Hope to see some of you in Kansas City!
I had the exact same problem on my '97 Expy at around 80k miles. cleaning the entire area around the throttle body plate is what did the trick for me. No problems since. That was three years ago.
It took 15 minutes & a $3 can of throttle body spray cleaner.
Well, it's acting up again. I was looking at the throttle body and there's a sticker that says don't clean. Special coating applied. Should I not clean around that? If not, what exactly did you clean wavinwayne?
All you need to get is an Intake Cleaner that is coating safe. I got a can of foamy intake cleaner and sprayed the entire contents of the can into the intake while the car was running as directed. Be prepared to see alot of smoke exiting the exhaust.... this is normal. Just follow the instructions oin the can and you should be good to go.
Yes, that's it. A Ford mechanic told me that Ford put a special coating on the throttle body that was supposed to keep dirt, grime, carbon, etc. from sticking to it. Well, it may have looked good on paper, but it didn't work.
Clean it. I cleaned mine three years ago, which in theory removed the "coating", but it has not really gottten dirty again since. I check it about every 6 months. It's still clean. If throttle body cleaner scares you, wet a shop towel with rubbing alcohol & use that.
I have a 98 Navigator and had a similar problem with idling, and it turned out
to be the vacuum lines.
The rubber boots tend to rot out, after 60,000 miles or so.
I would bet you a hundred to one that the Idle Air Control Value (IAC) is sticking. Many on this board have had the same problem (myself included). It is a very common problem with our trucks. Do a search on this board and you will see just how common it is.
Had the same problem--97 expy--Iac control valve. 10 mintue fix. Its located behind the throttle body. You might get lucky and get away with a cleaning.
Well as an update I changed the fuel filter. Might have helped a little bit, but it's still idling funny. I looked for the IAC, but didn't really know what I was looking for. I'll look again and probably change it out or clean it. Anone got a photo I can look at? I sure appreciate everyone's tips!! Thanks!
