today i was going down the road and noticed my seedometer wasn't working at all then i noticed my overdrive light on my shifter was flashing, it has flashed like this before but never seemed to be a problem, the overdrive is still working, i tried it so i know it is but it is still flashing, any ideas on how to fix it or what the problem is or what it would cause, any information would help me out, i did put a new speed sensor in about 6 months ago, since then i had to replace the spider gears.
Make sure the plugs behind the dash are secure. When having a problem with my speedo, I left one of the plugs that have the power for the speedo unplugged and encountered the same symptoms.
Is your truck running strangely also? Is the inside dome light working? if so,if not, then you may have bumped the roof over the dome light, the thin sheet metal will touch the dome light terminals, via the screws and cause a short circuit, I think the fuse will be F4 open, if my hypothesis is correct.
The overdrive light flashing is the transmissions way of telling you that it senses something wrong. Read once that it normally has to do with the torque converter but I could be wrong.
Check the speed sensor for metal shavings. It sounds like you changed the sensor then the spyder gears, so I would suspect that the sensor is reading inacurately because of the metal shavings on it from the gears. The sensor will cause the trans and speedo to not operate properly as both need the speed signal for shifting patterns and acuarte speed readings. You will later need to undo the battery to clear codes and recheck
well i guess it is the speed sensor, i pulled it yesterday(it is bad)i just replaced that darn thing but when i changed the gears i didn't get all of the shavings out or i got a new problem with them, the speed sensor, a peice of shaving cut right through the center of it, can you tell me the best way to get out all of the shavings, i was going to drain the oil and flush it with a water hose but kind of skeptic about it.
no water, clean out all that you can with brake cleaner spray and wipe it down real good. use a magnet and feel around well and dont miss the depressions. If you can you may want to take out the axles and clean out the axle tubes, I would just run a rag/towel through them a couple times. refill with 80/90 weight and add friction modifier if you have a traction loc.
If a shop did the spider gear job I would take it back to them and show them the sensor and have them replace it and clean the rear end like they should have.
well i did the job (poorly of course) i replaced the sensor the good news is ford wanted $35, i got it at autozone for $12 but it didn't fix the problem it was the wire to the sensor, i fixed it and the old one works fine still, but i kept the new one because with the shape that one is in i will ned one soon, i should probally go ahead and replace it before it end up like the last on, it was so demolished i had to use neelde nose plyers to get it out where it fell apart, still don't see how ford can charge 35 and autozone 12. autozone tried to sell me something that goes in the trans. they said that wa the speed sensor for my truck but i think it might be aspeed sensor for a manual but i don't see one on the auto.
