I need to replace the ignition lock tumblers on my 89 BII automatic with tilt. What are the steps in getting to the tumblers. I have read Chiltons and it is a little cofusing on what & how you remove plastic parts to get to the lock. Appreciate any advice you hace.
From my Haynes: Disconnect negative cable from battery. Turn key to run. On models equipped with tilt steering squeeze the upper extension shroud at 6 & 12 o'clock positions and pop it free from the retaining plate
Insert a small screw driver (i think i used a 1/8th inch drill bit when I did mine) into the lock cylinder housing and release the actutor pin while pulling out on the switch.
As I recall the new tumbler just pushes in & snaps into place.
why are you changing it? Lost key,key doesn't work well, wing tips breaking, etc.
Any how, some you have to pull the steering wheel to take out, and some
you can do like '87 XLT' said.(not sure about your year, model) If it is the one you press the retainer to remove you have to have it turned to the on postiton to release it,you have to do this to install the new one also.
turn key, press retainer, and insert lock cylinder
