really is Rotella a good oil. I spent almost that much fust buying the oil from walmart but I got the mobil brand, not sur if thats a good brand either. I might check that out Thanks...I love this site
Yep, that right. 39.95 for oil change. Too bad they dont do fuel filter. I take the bottle of lucas, and they give me the left over oil to take home. I always said wal-mart is hard to beat.
Rotella-T 15W40 seems to be the widely preferred brand for our engines. I'm new to all this so I don't know why.
As for Walmart: Yes, they are cheap, and I go there for stuff all the time, but the only thing I'd trust their mechanics to do is stand there and look not-smart. When I first got my truck, I went to Walmart to ask them how much it'd cost to have my oil changed. They quoted me the standard 21.99 that they charge for ricers. When I eplained to the girl behind the desk that that price couldn't be right for my diesel, she went to get a mechanic. You can imagine my surprise when he robot-esquely quoted me the same price.
By that time I'd decided not to have them change my oil, but for fun I decided to find out how much more this guy didn't know. I explained that I needed 14-15 quarts of Rotella 15W40. He couldn't believe that an engine would take that much oil. He had to look it up in the computer to convince himself that I was right.
So, no oil changes at Walmart for me. I went to a dedicated oil change/quick lube shop near where I live. They did a good job for $53, but I think that from now on I'll change the oil myself.
Walmart has a yellow 5 gallon catch pan for about 6.50.

So what if the kid or the guy doesn't know that your diesel truck takes 15 quarts? It's not like most of the vehicles on the road are diesels. Their standard procedure is to get the information from the computer. How hard is it to change the oil and filter? not hard....
and it doesn't mean jack if the kid doesn't know anything about diesels. All he needs to know is drain the oil, change the oil filter, and add enough oil. All of the information is provided from the computer.
Just because the guy didn't know how much oil is needed for the diesel truck doesn't mean jack. Just tell the guy that the diesel is a different motor from the gasser and that it needs more oil. That's it!
Walmart probably pays the guy $7/hour, and you expect a $40/hour service? Take it to the dealers then.
I like Walmrat because it's cheap and the employees treat you with respect. Not like punks at the dealers who think they are smarter than you.

i took the wife's car to wal-mart service... once... never again.... don't get me wrong.. i shop at wal-mart all the time... decent stuff cheap.. that's ok, but don't ask me to let some idiot kid who isn't even making $7 an hour to work on my mule..! nope... sorry, not gonna happen... they worked on the wife's car for 6 hours... all they did was change the oil and rotate and balance the tires... and i watched them... they didn't have too much to do.. they were just standing around because they didn't know what to do... also... i checked the oil level b4 i paid them... it was 2 quarts low...! sorry wal-mart, but your formula for selling cheap products doesn't work in the service department... if you want to make money performing service you have to have guys that know how to do that job... and they cost more than $7 an hour... i turned a wrench when i was in the army and i wouldn't do that job for less than $16 an hour... that is hard work...!
Westladog, I don't expect the kid at Walmart to know everything about every vehicle. But he did act like he was smarter than me, and acted like I was the punk when I told him I needed 14 quarts. I guess it was his attitude that got to me. He didn't treat me with respect, like the people at your Walmart do. I'm not gonna let somebody like that work on my truck just for the sake of saving ten bucks.
Again, Walmart's a good store. I shop there often. But I'm not gonna let them work on my truck.
They go by general car. The computer print out on my oil change says 5 quart and 35psi in each of my 10ply tires lol. But in the end notes they show the 2.5 gallons of RotellaT. Quick story about walmat though.
My friend has a 97 single cab and he always takes it to walmart. One day he goes in to get it changed and they told him they would not do it because there was an oversized plug in the oil pan. He has been taking it to the same walmart for 5 years. After showing the receipt for the previous oil change they took us to the manager. We called the local dealership from there and they quoted a price on what it would take to get the pan replaced- back to original. Two days later he received a check from WalMart for $1500. Needless to say, he didnt take the truck to get the pan replaced. Since it does not leak, he just takes it to another place.
Can't beat that though. If they fudge up, they will take care of it.
Price like that why would anyone want to do it themselves?
Because no one other than myself or a close friend touches my truck..... bottom line... I also enjoy working on my rig... takes the stress out of every day life....
