CPP disc conversion...

I'm still installing the conversion and finally redrilled the zerk fittings to a new location. I also mounted the brackets and installed the bearing adapter (used a torch, heated up and slipped it on the spindles.) I noticed the bearings won't slide on the adapter so I'm sanding them down as the instructions say. Should the bearing slide on easy or snug? I didn't get the outer bearings with the kit? Does anyone who did this conversion know if you use the original bearings that came with the truck, or am I suppose to have bearings come with the kit? The original don't look like they fit correctly? Another hump here huh?

I got a complete bearing set and seals with my kit. Only thing missing was the outer washer - the one with the little tang on it that fits in the slot in the spindle. The stock washer will be used. It looks like the inner bearings should be a snug fit on the bearing adapter. I'm still trying to get my bearing adapters on.

lowr, when I did mine the bearing fit was very tight as well. The kit is designed this way so you can make the proper fit because each spindle is slightly different. They wouldn't want it to be too sloppy right from the start. It took me a bit of sanding but I went very slowly to make sure i didn't f*** it up. I sanded mine to the point where they will come off fairly easily but don't have any noticble play in the inner bearing portion. I didn't want them to be too tight and then have to wreck them to get them off. At this point I am at a bare frame so I see them going on and off several more times before the truck is on the road.

Not sure if this helps you or not but take your time and be patient.

I had to do quite a bit of sanding with 180 grit paper. The inner bearing goes on nicely now and butts up to the bearing adapter. CPP didn't give me the outer bearing and races. I noticed that the bearing races that came with the rotors need to be removed and replaced with the ones that came with the bearing. The inner bearing looks like it works, however it's different.

John, the bearing adapter is very simple. I took my gas torch and heated the adapter, then when it was hot, I merely picked it up with some pliers and slid it over the spindle. It goes right on. The adapter cools and locks onto the spindle. You can put it in the oven for a while or use a propane torch too.
I'm calling CPP today and get info on the outer bearings. I'll probably just go to the auto parts and get the right bearing instead of waiting for them to send. Hmmm... Looks like CPP needs some work in the packaging department. I've heard a lot of people missing parts from their kits.????

Lowr, I bought my tubular engine crossmember and tranny crossmember from CPP. There was a hole in the box when it arrived and the end caps for the engine crossmember were missing. They shipped some out the next day when I called them and complained though. I had a good responce from them and they fixed the problem with no complaints.

If you don't call and complain they don't know there was a problem.

I'd almost rather crawl through a mile of broken glass than ever deal with CPP again. I too ordered their disc brake conversion kit. They sent two different size banjo bolts, and neither one fit! That's just one thing in a list screw-ups. They won't get another chance to screw up with me. Someone should take a poll...CPP; how bad do they suck?

I'd get in on that poll! I share you less than desirable feelings for CPP--also with a disc conversion kit. They shorted me the spacers; they mailed them out the day I called them, but it still took another week. Additionally, it literally took 4 weeks for them to send my order to me. Ridiculous service. However, I am very pleased with the disc conversion on my son's truck. The only problem I have is the fact that you have to grind down the hump on the calipers where they hit the mounting brackets. Seems like they could have designed them with a notch in the bracket. The only other problem is the bracket hits the king pin retainer, so you have to deal with that. But it really stops now!!

I called CPP today and talked with the tech line. It appears they didn't send the outer bearings on my kit. The instructions on installing are really poor. It turns out the inner bearings remain in tack on the rotors, the outer need the races removed and an A2 bearing installed. I basically told them I was unhappy and that several people in here were upset over the service. Since the bearings ran $6 a piece, I just went to the parts store and pick up a set. I haven't put the calibers on and figure I'll be grinding them down also. This install is not as easy as they make out to be. I've done some serious modifications to get this to even work. I'm almost thinking it would of been easier to install an IFS front clip. I was also informed that CPP is relocating to a new bigger facility. I believe in Anaheim, CA. Too bad, I really like their products, but if they can't get it together, I'll go elsewhere.

As I was progressing through list of the potential vendors to supply "project TYMNBUX" , I read an article in Custom Classic Trucks where CPP was installing the rear suspension and fuel tank in their truck so I called them to discuss it and the guy on the phone did not even realize the company had a truck, was working on it, or anything about the 4 page article. How's that for customer support!!. Speaks loudly of the management of the company in general in my book. But I am biased due to my desire for TQM and the fact I don't give money to bozo's just to to get BS parts or support. Always vote with your feet or with your money. Remember...the big fancy color ads only mean that is where the company put's their resources. People vs: print. Go figure.

Your not the only one who will not go to CPP. I was looking for a dropped front axle for for my truck. I was told they would have them on Date "xx" it was about 5 weeks away. OK, I waited about 6 weeks and called still did not have it. I was told should be here this week. Called back next week and still did not have it. I went to a different company. I checked a few places that did have the axle in stock, there was a reason they wanted $475 for the axle and $150 for the tie rod ends. I ordered mine from Cenpen and got the axle for about $385.00 and the tie rod ends for $125.00. With the price of steel going up I am not sure about todays prices.

To any new pople reading this. If you looking for a disk brake conversion kit try Master Power Brake. I ordered their kit and never left my garage during the installation. Everything worked on my 1950 right down to the master cylinder. I did have to move the pin for the king pin to the other side. Not a big deal I had new king pins and it came apart easily.

I won't use CPP ever again. And you guys just reinforced that. I also heard that ECI has a great conversion, great service and have been around for several years.
