i'm looking at explorers between 1992-1996 or so. what are some things i should look for? what is the best way to see if the 4wd system works or not? and i'm actually looking more at explorer sports with the manual transmission than anything else. if you could give me some heads up i'd appreciate it.
also their is an explorer sport pretty close to wear i live. its a 1993 with 155000 miles on it. 5 speed manual, 4x4. has some rust on it but the inside looks clean. i haven't gotten to drive it yet but will get a chance to test her out. the price is $2200 so its pretty affordable. let me know if you have advice.
honestly, a truck at 150k miles is at the end of it's life. Yes, I know you can drive it more if it was taken care of but who knows how the truck was treated and maintained? Plan on spending $3000 right off the bat on drive line wear and tear issues. Personally you would be better off buying one newer with less miles on it around for $6000 and you won't be throwing good money after bad. Trannies, clutches, diffs, transfer cases and engine problems can add up quickly.
Good luck
I have a 94, stock except for some 31's. It has 130k's and runs like new. I'm on my second trans and r.a. bushings. They are good for better than 150k, but whether auto or stick, the trans are crap, and the r.a. bushings seem to wear out quickly. Unless you're into 4x4ing, got with a 95-up, and stay away from the sohc's. Get a 5.0 or 4.0ohv.
from what I have been told the transmissions mated to the V8 models are actually pretty sturdy units... I know that this will sound lame, but make sure that the heat/cool works OK (blend door problems being so common). I bought mine used it the door was broken (I knew about it so it was part of why the price was real low)... unfortunately the quick fix did not work, so if I do want to have that work ever again I need to get the parts and tear the whole dashboard out.
I have had 2 Explorers a 91 xlt 4dr auto bought with 165,000 on it with a rebuilt tranny and sold it in great running condition at 250,000. The 2nd 92 2dr xl 4x4 standard, my son now has inherited and I bought it at 125,000 and now has 200,000 and has not had anything but the timing chain tensioner replaced. My son harps on his rigs and so far he just has to replace the starter. I upgraded to a larger F-150 xtra cab v-8. I do really miss my Explorer though.
my dad and i test drove it today. really the suv isn't too bad although i think i'm going to hold out (i really just wanted to see what it was like). the transmission and the motor seemed pretty solid, the steering had a little play in it but other than that a pretty solid vehicle. it does need the sound system redone though (nothing works sound wise) the a/c worked nice, power everything worked nice. through and through an alright buy for the money. i am keeping my fingers crossed for a 93-96 flareside f150 later on though (yea right but we'll see)
