I've got the tried and true peice of crap M5OD in my '94 4x4 mated to an i6. She tends to grind into third gear sometimes a lot, sometimes a little bit, sometimes not at all. Not sure if its a syncro problem or a fork problem, or somthing else. It only grinds on an upshift not a down shift. (ie from 2nd to 3rd, but not from 4th or 5th to 3rd)
if its major, would it be more cost effective to just run her till i cant get 3rd anymore or should i get it taken care of
Considering the cost of replacement even with a used unit. I'd say get her fix soon you'll save money. A rebuild kit with sycros should run about $250 at the most. If your mechanical you save a lot more doing it your self. On a scale of 1-10 rebiulding one of these rates 5 maybe 6.
this may or may not sound weird, but when i put the gearshift into third more towards the right side of the gate, it almost never grinds, but when i put it in more towards the right of the gate it always grinds. there is a little slop in the shifter. does this mean anything? is the shifter engageing gears abnormally?
Old post but since I just busted my M5OD I'm looking into history. If the original poster is still watching this, my 93 Explorer has this same 3'rd gear grind. When I upshift fast it will always grind. I notice keeping the stick shoved to the right when shifting and shifting slow, it will not grind. Another thing that adds to this grind, and inability to get into 1st gear at a light, is the hydraulic clutch system not working correctly. I'm on my 5th master cylinder in 173K miles. It tends to blow out the seal and not move the fluid so the clutch doesn't disengage fully.
I had that disengagement problem earlier this month, ended up being that the slave cylinder was blown. Replaced that and the clutch (at the same time). Disengagement problems were gone, but the 3rd gear grind still happend.
When i pulled the drain plug on the tranny there was a dowel pin stuck to it, i think it may have something to do with that, but i dont know where that pin went, so i didnt put it back in.
I know the forks are worn down on mine and i will replace and fix the dowel pin problem in the spring, it's too damn cold to do it now.
