NP205 Shifter Mounting Components?

79 Bronco, converted NP203 to NP205 behind a '69 460 and C6.

I am assembling the shifter for the NP205 and I have the NP205 shifter and a bolt. What other components do I need to complete. It seems that there should be a sleeve or bushings or some other component(s) that I am missing.

I looked in my Chiltons and Haynes and found nice exploded views of the NP205 but nothing on the shifter. I also searched this forum and came up with ~400 hits. I when through the fist 8 pages and gave up. I also searched Jeff's Graveyard and other sources on the net.

Could someone take a peek at their NP205 and see what I am missing? Sources to buy these components would also be appreciated. I have very limited 4WD sources at my local boneyards.

Thanks.

Do you mean the bolt that holds the shift lever to the tailhousing? If so, the originally bolt doesn't have a bushing, it's collared. The threads are something like 9/16 which steps up to a shank which is the same OD as the ID of teh pivot hole in the shift lever.

The bolt is 9/16 thread ~1-1/8 long to a .750 OD shoulder ~1-1/2 long to the bolt head. The bolt connects the shifter to the tail housing boss. When tightening up the bolt, the bolt will bottom on the tailgate housing and has sloppy shifting.

The shifter has a .800 bore, 1-1/2 wide.

When I attach the shifter to the tail housing, there is an end gap play of .100” between the bolt head and the edge of the shifter and .050” gap of the bore (.025/side) of the shifter to the bolt shoulder which makes the shifter very sloppy when trying to shift it.

From what I gather, I am missing a washer that is about .080/.090” thick to take up the .100” end play and some type of sleeve to go over the .750 shoulder on the bolt (thin nylon sleeve to take up the .025”/side slack in the bore of the shifter and to prevent squeaking?).

I put a .150” washer on, the shifter locked up. I can’t find a .080/.090” washer that is .800 ID but I could make one if this would solve the end play problem, and limit some of the side play on the diameter difference of .050”

I just want to make sure that I am thinking along the right track, I seem to be getting a brain fart over this one. I sure wish I would have dissembled the shifter myself…

I will get you a picture of it tommorrow if you want, I just pulled the cab off so its easy to check My shifter has 2 (one on each end) thin, collared sleeves that the shifter rides on. I do believe there is also a washer on the end closest to the T-case adapter.

That sounds close to what I am imagining, Franken-Truck. I found a nylon sleeve that fits over the .750” shoulder of the bolt, but it only covers less that half of the 1.500” length of the shoulder. I’m thinking that there are probably 2 of these sleeves. I doubt that the “Help” section of the local parts store would carry this.

I think the washer would be at the head of the bolt so it would provide just enough space for the shifter to move without binding. If you can verify this, I would appreciate it. I will make a .090” thick washer with a .800” ID tomorrow and see if this helps. If there is a washer on your truck, could you try to get a measurement if you have a pair of calipers?

So far I have:

Shifter
Bolt

I think I need the following:

1 or 2 sleeves .025” wall thickness and to cover the 1.500” length of the bolt shoulder.
1 washer .090” thick with a .750” hole.

Thanks for the help.

Oky-doky, here it is. As you can see, mine are really worn out, but those splits in the sleeves are supposed to be there. I will get you a measurement on the washer, though I will have to dig for my calipers The washer seems to be there to keep the shoulder from digging into the adapter, it's inner diameter is just big enough to fit onto the threaded section, but not over the shoulder. Also, check Broncograveyard.com to see if it they sell some kind of kit. They have lots of "stuff" like that. I think there a site sponsor as well.

good luck

Excellent pic! Thanks. Yesterday, I smashed a poly bushing over the shifter bolt from the head side of the bolt and it really took the slack out and it shifts good but I really want to set it up like stock. Plus I'm afraid the bolt might back out on me. It looks like the nylon sleeves take up the slack in the side to side play in the .750" diameter and the edges of the sleeves would take up the ~.080" end play slack. No lock washers? Seems like the bolt would have a chance of backing out. Maybe not...

Now, for the $64,000 question, where could I find replacement sleeves??? Anyone replace these before? I looked at Jeff's site and didn't find anything.

The last 10% of this project is taking 90% of the time! Details, details...

Here's what I came up with for making my own sleeves. Can any one see any problems with going this route?

I guess it will work. If the dimensions are good, go for it Thats a bit much for me for a part thats probably $2 if you can find it, hehe. Have you tried any of the older auto parts stores in your area? Jeff' has a break down of the shifter, have you asked him about these parts? Local junkyard? What I was going to do was get some .025 brass tubing from the local hobby shop, cut to length, put a split in it, grease it up, and slap 'er together.

Just following up on the post and hopefully this will help others with this problem. If you have access to a lathe, it's easy to whip some up yourself. I didn't check with Ford but I looked in some boneyards with no luck. I didn't even bother with auto parts stores, every time I go in there and ask for something other than a starter or alternator, I get a glazed look like I just hit them with the headlights!

Per the dimensions above, I installed the sleeves, bushings, collars or whatever they are called and the shifter works great with no slop and positive engagement. Although it is hard to see the split, it is there as on the stock pieces.

Thanks, Franken-Truck for your help. Keep on Fordin'!
