5.0L engine trouble

I'm having some engine troubles, with my truck, I'll list the symptoms below the truck specs.

specs: stock, 1994 F150, E-AOD tranny, 5.0L engine, 130k miles, stock rear end.... 8.8", 3.08 ratio (according to the tag on it).

1: surges whennot under load; (revs up part way then almost stalls then reves again, stalls most of the time after 3 or 4 of theses, if it doesn't idle down and run smoth) When in a forward gear or reverse, the idle is smooth, but it has been known to die while in gear and not under load (coasting downhill in gear, letting engine comp. do brakeing).

2: Pings when under loads that it shouldn't (ie; going up a hill it may start pinging bad enough that I have to back out of the throtle on the freeway because I'm afraid I'm going to start doing some damage). This can sometimes be cured at times by using premium, but in a stock engine in an empty truck I don't think I should have to do that.

3: I don't know if this matters about the engine, but I'll put it in just in case it does.
The Air Bag light onthe dash has twice flashed a code at me. The code is either 3 flashes and 2 flashes, or 2 flashes and 3 flashes (3-2 or 2-3).
I assume that that is somethine to do with the airbag system and not the engine systems, but just in case, it's here.

the rest:
The truck still gets decent mileage (17 in mixed driveing, recently I drove empty through some local mountians ona 2-lane road, I went easy on it and pulled 19.56 I think).
I was thought that vacum leaks eats into your mileage.

Local parts store guy said that it was probably the Throtle Position Sensor (TPS) or the Idle Control Valve (ICV).

I haven't had a chance to hook it to a computer to see what it's throwing lately. A year ago a computer said "117 EDO not switching" on the first line and second line said "Exh. Lean". That was a Snap-On that said that. The parts store guy looked up the codes on his computer and asked what leter code it was (ie. U117). I told him that I didn't remember it having a letter on the code.

thank you for your time;
bd

pulling codes should always be step one. check out www.fordfuelinjection.com shows how do pull codes with a paperclip. this way your not throwing parts at it. Also your tranny is an E4OD. when was it tuned up last with new plugs,wires,cap/rotor , timing set at 10*btdc and fuel filter changed? might also run some Seafoam thru that motor with the mileage it has on it. the pinging could be timing,bad gas, hot motor/intake air or carbon build up in the cylinder head causing an increase in compression ratio.
get us the codes and we can go from there

Actually, there is a size difference between the E4OD and the AOD-E. The E4OD is massive, this tranny is not....
