Ranger wont flash trouble codes

I have an 85 Ranger with a 2.3. Its acting crappy and I heard about pulling the codes form the computer. I don't own a scan tool or a volt meter, so I hooked it up the 'check engine light way'. I have heard two ways to do it, the one on this web site says to connect a jumper wire between the self test imput and the pin at the right top of the daignostic connector. The other way I have heard it is to do it the same as above but to connect a wire to the second pin on the bottom row, to the positive battery terminal. I did all the steps to hook it up and tried it both ways. Each time I tried it nothing flashed. After I turned on the key to do the KOEO test, the fuel pump would do its second of running and stop, and there would be two clunking noises coming from somewhere in the engine compartment. Thats It! No codes flashed, not even the everythings OK code, and no other things happened. I made sure to warm up the enginge and have no electrical load on, and transmission in neutral.
I even unpluged the TPS to see if it would flash a code for it, but nothing.
I need help. Thanks

You can't do the light way on your year, see if you can borrow a meter.
