Hello everyone
i have a 04 f250 bone stock crew cab long bed
this truck has a 38 gallon fuel tank "diesel"
any idea how many miles i should get from a full tank at a speed of 70-80? im going on a 1200 mile drive tonight just tryin to get a idea.
I can tell you that my truck gets about 16.5 going those speeds. I have been keeping it right at 72 mph for the last two tanks and have gotten 18.5. The only difference in the trucks is the box, i have a short box.
You may get by w/ 2 fill-ups, but that is pushing it until you get to know your truck. They are all different. I have averaged 14.6 over 10K miles and have the 29 gal tank. I recommend filling to the brim, time consuming but worth it. After initial fuel pump shut off, I slowly add 4-5 more gallons of diesel to the tank. Keeps it above F for 100 miles!
I don't run those speeds all the time, my rig with rural driving gets 17.5mpg. Last week I hit the freeway at 73mph (average), for a 300 mile trip on a full tank, so the second half of the 38 gallon tank was my normal commute. I still got 620 miles on 34.2 gallons. That's right at 18mpg. If you can keep the RPM's right around 2000-2100, That seems to be the sweet spot for these things. More RPM at 80mph starts to kill the fuel economy. So if you don't get that sort of average mileage, then I'd expect that you're going to need a bit more than two tankfuls to complete your trek of 1200 miles.

Wish I had the Longbed
Now that i'm out of the winter months, i'm starting to see bout 20'ish when doing the math (I don't have a lie-o-meter). The diesel at the Flying J in Cheyenne is phenomenal! Only problem is that the wind blows into you 40mph no matter what direction you're going . . . so that kills the enjoyment of getting very fresh diesel. A buddy of mine is brewing BioDiesel for his implements . . . he's gonna test it on his old 94 350 to see if it fries it or not . . .if it goes good i may take a try.
Customz - poon your tank and you won't have to dribble the last 5 gals in. Remove the tank and the sender to reach the vent tube and trim it within an inch of the top of the tank, this lets the air vent under full stream during filling. Save you 3 minutes or so everytime. FYI
Nope, 7.0mpg is at 55 mph, takin it easy. I'm 50yrs old so don't go so fast anymore. I have 3000 miles on it so far. Tadd (ATS Diesel) installed scmt tuner @ 1000 miles. On the high torque setting I get 8.8 mpg, haven't tried the other two settings yet.
Well,
I am now almost at 30,000 miles, and my in town drive routine nets me 15.67/mpg average with a lot of stop-&-go Dallas traffic.Highway driving, where I drive at 2000-2100 rpm, which puts me around 75-78mph has netted as much as 19.85 heading out to West Texas. Now, a strong head wind will knock it down a bit, but overall highway has been around 18.5.
I am also a Superchip user, but I have settled on the "economy"- middle tune, which has given me the best combination of power and mileage so far.
I have a 2003 F250 crew cab FX 4x4 short bed.
