Same thought still applies if the rotors weren't replaced,if the studs aren't fully seated they WILL loosen.Aside from someone seriously trying to screw-up your world, the problem lies with the studs/nuts.Rotors/bearings won't loosen them.Like JBronco mentioned, whenever I install new wheels, studs, nuts,I always tell the person to re-check torque at 25,50,and 100 miles just to be sure (after initial replacement, not everytime the wheels are removed)and have never had any come back or come off.
I always *re-check* my lug nut torque on all my vehicles 50 or so miles after a wheel is off for some reason. Notice I said re-check......I also always torque lug nuts down correctly with a good torque wrench to 100ft/lb (on a Bronco)......unless I am on the side of the road.
I have a 1987 Ford Bronco, it is a beautiful truck but recently I have been having such an issue with this thing. I got the brakes changed about 3 weeks ago and since then the lugs won't stay on the studs. I was told the studs were stripped so I got those changed but today I was on a quasi highway and felt the lugs come off again this time my tire flew from under the truck and I was sitting on the ground. Does anyone know why this could be happening?<O</O It is a manual locking hub This is the driver side front tire in question <O</O
Any help would be great.
I have to say that after reading all of the posts I could only come to one conclusion...whoever repalced your brakes probably stripped your lugs or studs when replacing the rims. Did you have problems with the rims/lugs before you went to get your brakes changed? If not I would say Joe Mechanic screwed up! Holy hell I would be doing some bitch'n! Their mistake could have cost you your life as well as the lives of others on the road and anyone else in your truck! This is why I always do my own work...nobody else to blame but myself! Did I know how to work on all of this stuff before??? NO...thats why I bought the haynes manual, read, learned, took a chance and applied...go for it! Sorry for the rant...just ticks me off when shops screw upa nd don't own up!
They are going to need to replace your studs and possibly lugs.
they can wear out. the threads wear and get a larger inside diameter. the wheel taper could be wallowed out. the lugnut taper could be out of spec.
the studs can look ok but be worn.
I don't know how common it could be, I've had about 50 cars and trucks over 25 years and never had a wheel that kept falling off - and I've had some ratty-a$$ vehicles too. I mean cars that I paid $25 for.
Notice that he said that he replaced all of the studs, and the wheel still fell off. Something is definitely not right.

JBronco if you are referring to me I am a she not a he. I am with you though I don't know where the problem lies but it has been two days now since the incident and the wheel has not come off again. I still feel very weary about the whole thing as I had to tighten one this morning b4 I went to work. I hope my over paranoid self don't over tighten the lugs by checking them at every stop and every time I get in the truck
again! you had to tighten another lug nut. wow definitely wrong! the studs definitely aren't seated right or those studs aren't the right ones. if you have a chance, have them show you what the studs they used. the studs should have splines by the top of the head of the stud. these are for jeep, but should look similar. http://www.rubicon4x4.com/catalog/im...wheelstuds.jpg
by all means, no lug nuts should come loose in two days. you shouldn't have to check your lug nuts everytime. tell whoever put them on to fix the problem the right way with the right parts. threaten them to call BetterBusinessBureau on them. If they don't compile take it to a reputable tire shop and call BBB.
*really... no need to have life threaten accident with little stupid mistakes like that*
which reminds me, IMO... I'd ask for my money back...bass-ona-tard...hehe

Yea the ones on there look like those that you linked me to. I will however take the truck to a shop and get it looked at.
Thx
I once had the same problem with my 79 bronco it came off in the first place because the lugs were loose. when it worked its way off the two times after that i found that when it came off the first time it must have warped the rim.
replace the studs lugnuts and the rim and your problem should be solved. then send the shop that did your brakes the bill its there fault the rim is now bad.
I know that some shops will slide in the new stud, then take the one of the lugnuts that they are planning to use on wheel installation and tighten it down on the stud until it gets tight against the back of the axle. However, on many styles of stud the threads bottom out before the stud is in fully. Therefore they should be using a spacer between the axle and the nut. If they don't, and just keep tightening down the nut until the stud is tight, it strips some of the threads out of the nut and then damages the stud when backing the nut off the stud.
I'd take my truck to a different shop that specialize in tires and wheels and have them inspect it. If they say the problem was improper installation the first time then you can go back to the first shop and try and get some satisfaction (money refunded or the new bill paid), if you are non confrontational then just never go back to that shop.
