I have been looking for a project truck and have the opportunity to buy a '71 F100 Explorer LWB with a 360 V8 and C4 auto. It has just over 100K miles. The only modification that has been done to it is he said that he had a mechanic do something with the engine so that it would run regular unleaded fine. The truck looks like it is in great shape, and the engine looks good. The owner is asking $2500. Is this a deal? Is there anything that I should look for?
Thanks for the help! After reading through the forums, I am excited about the possibilities.
the tranny is not a c4 but probably a c6, look at the cab mounts for rust. if the truck is solid and runs good that is not a bad buy. we down here in the south believe if a truck runs and you can haul stuff in it no matter what it looks like its worth 500. even a rust bucket. good luck

The only thing I think of is the installation of harden valve seats. This was recommended quite a bit, when the leaded/unleaded conversion was going on.
I agree that the price isn't horribly high, but I'd expect it to be in exceptional condition for that much. Unless you're really looking for a truck of that vintage, you should be able to buy one a lot newer for that kind of money.
It really comes down to how much it is worth to you.
Well Like all thats been said.....If your into that Era....Like I am....It would be worth it...I also live in the South...and Like what was said we pay $500 for anything that hauls the trash to the Green boxes...lol..
And as For as $2500 goes....That wouldnt even come close to making a Down Payment on my 70 F250, That I bought in 72.... And thats only if it were for sale...(which its not) I love my Old Truck... I have had alot newer..and sold them all..
Thanks Steve, I see your Project is lookin good!!! I Like it!! I am going to do an Axle flip with mine this spring...and lower it some.... Its not a work horse anymore..So....
I bought my '68 F250 a month or so ago for $900, and it's in very good original condition - nearly rust-free. My F100 cost $350 and it was driveable but fairly rusty. My brother just sold a running '67 on eBay for <$300.
At least around here these trucks just don't sell for big money. If you want a project, you really shouldn't need to spend more than $1,500 IMO.
one of my parts guys just sold a 69 f250 with a 460 c6 new tires and a body better than my project truck for 800. i just this saturday bought a 70 short bed stepside running for 200

Reason: add on
My 69 was $2400 with 30k miles on the 390 / C6 - new tires on chrome half moon rims, new radiator, a/c...it came from AZ. Having the ability to remove any nut or bolt on the frame without any fighting ANY RUST is worth the extra $$. Sure the body is dinged a bit and the paint was shot...but That is the easy part to fix. Have a good clean frame and understructure is important...and I got it.
My 1971 f-250 4x4 was $7000. I think it is worth every penny though because it was what I wanted. No one would even try to talk me out of it. Actually my wife encouraged it!! My truck is in really good shape though. I would post pictures but haven't figured that out yet..........
If you like the truck and drove it and you feel it is worth it then buy it. You said you wanted a project truck, how much 'project' do you want to do???

I agree - start with a solid truck and work from there.
My F250 came from AZ as well. It still has the silver paint on the driveshaft and diff. It's waaaaay cleaner underneath than my '93. That's why I bought it instead of building up the F100.
4X4 is definitely gonna cost more, because there weren't nearly as many of them built. $7k sounds like a lot to me, but if you're happy with your purchase, that's all that really counts!
