I have only been a member for short time, under the privalage of e-mailing, so Pual, here is thread dedicated to your question so I can help.
i saw your post on your experience w/auto tranny's. i have '01 4.2 w/4R70W that has a slight jerk or backlash during come down to low as when approching a stop sign. i really bugs me, my wifes 97 grand marquis w/close to 100k is as smooth as silk upon downshifting to a stop (the truck has 66k)
someone told me the t.c. might not be disengaging until the last minute. i bought it used and there are no signs of abuse. (2wd) oil changed mercon 5, and filter replaced. otherwise it works /shifts just like a new one. its just that low downshift when coming to a stop that really bugs me. Is this tranny a good one provided its not abused & maintained? by the way there's a TSB sticker on the pan, i don't remember the no. Any help or info appreciated! thanks...paul.
If indeed it is your TC then the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) selinoid and valve may need cleaning. You can test this by holding the truck in 4th - can you feel the TC lockup (change in lower RPM)? It should UNLOCK the same after you press the gas a little or begin to stop - once again you will notice a change in RPM and the motor will rev a little more since the TC in unlocked. If this works out fine then it isn't your TC unless it is unlocking far after you start stopping.
The 4R line of transmissions (4R70W/4R75W) is the ancestor of the AOD for the most part (The AOD got it's gene pool from the FMX). After the AOD came the electronic version the AODE. The AOD was a modern masterpeice that had it's troubles, mainly due to Lockup COnverters, but in all a great OD tranny. The AODE and E4OD was simply FORD's first real swim in ELECTRONIC trannies, and ended shortly after they found that these trannies were junk . THough they had the same good (not great) parts of there NON-electric parents, they had a few problems that ford resolved by simply building a new set of internals/main control body now called the 4R70W/75W. In my opinion these trannies are the king of OVERDRIVE and will remain simple and among the best tranny ford will ever make. Good HP rating/Great internals/Simple/reliable - that is what you want.
We will examin the downshift problems afte ryou test the TC lockup feature.
