I have two issues to address and need help. It is on a 91 F-150 with a 302 in it.
#1 - The tachometer on dash jumps from normal to 3000 plus at random. The engine speed doesnt change, just the tach and when it jumps its like it just hangs there for a few seconds and goes back to actual rpm's. It has been doing this for a long time, mainly an appearance annoyance to me but wondering if its a sign of an impending problem.
#2 - My oil pressure! I have 125000 miles on the engine. It runs well but the gauge on dash was at the lower side on oil pressure. So, I used a can of some "guaranteed to increase compression" crap and now when engine is warm and I am at idle the gauge drops to zero if it is in gear. If I put it in nuetral or increase rpm's it goes back up. When gauge is at zero it makes no ticking noises nor does it run any different. Could it be a sending unit or something simple? Is it related to tach problem? Looking for advice and cheap solutions.
You need to check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage and determine if you have an oil pressure problem or not. If no oil pressure then you have worn out bearings. If mechanical guare shows you have correct pressure then guage or sending unit is bad.
